A question on embedding

This is probably an over asked question by young photographers like me. BUT could anyone give me info on the process of getting embedded with the military. Even for training exercises and things of that nature.

Thank you for the info.

There are quite a few good posts on this process already, one quite recent but titled slightly strange – something like “War is hell but how the hell do you get to go?”

Search for ‘embed’ or ‘embedding’ in posts/replies and you’ll find a veritable treasure trove.

If you’re looking to start by covering training exercises, contact the PAO office for your NG. They should be able to help.

Ha, yeah that was my strange post; I also was intruiged like Josh…

I’ve been looking into the UK side of things; and found that sure enough – its a lengthy bureaucratic minefield where media outlet backing and reccomendations are pretty much essential…

Apparently still do-able though(!) Good luck! I’m still looking for the balls!

All the info you MUST have in order to get embedded is here. You MUST be pre-credentialed by an established news/photo agency or known publication; they will check. Get your body armor from a trusted source; I recommend the Interceptor set with DAPS (shoulder protectors), throat, collar and groin piece all by PointBlank. They also do a Kevlar helmet but I personally thinks it’s a bit over-priced. Don’t flinch at the price of the body armor. Just make sure it fits.

Read the stuff on the site link above VERY CAREFULLY and ask as many questions about what it’s like to actually be embedded with people who have been there even if they sound like proper bonehead questions; pg’s and pj’s on here as well as emailing other well known snappers who have actually been there. Ask question after question after question and think hard if an embed is something that you think is cool or something that is part of your career. If you get put with a very active unit, you won’t come back the same person! That can either be good or unfortunate! Good luck!
