"HULK" FILMMAKERS USED $0 FLICKR PHOTO
A friend sent this to me: When the producers of the blockbuster movie “The Incredible Hulk” needed a picture of a destroyed home for a mock newspaper, they turned to Flickr. A newspaper featured during the film’s opening credits – purportedly showing destruction caused by the Hulk – features an actual image of a home damaged during a hurricane. According to The Daily Press of Newport News, Virginia, the photo is by hobbyist photographer Tony Alter, who posted it on his Flickr page. Alter’s] ‘Hulk’ picture isn’t the first to be used by professionals. In 2007, the Life Takes Visa Internet ad campaign paid Alter $150 for use of a Volkswagen Beetle picture…. Although Alter didn’t get any money for his “Hulk” picture, or a place in the credit roll, he is still excited to share his pictures with anyone who’s interested.” “The Incredible Hulk” has now grossed $115.5 million._via c-monster

Question: did Mr. Alter give prior permission for the house picture to be used?

No permission was given or asked, nor money exchanged. More from PDN:

“The Incredible Hulk” has now grossed $115.5 million. A shame they couldn’t spare a few bucks to pay this guy for the use of his photograph.

another example of why its getting harder and harder for professional photographers to make a living.
|
This also shows that volume devalues a commodity…
|
This also came to my mind: Should Flickr not have some tutorial/general awareness material to make all the contributors aware of their rights as a photographer? Being a big archive of photography/video does Flickr not have such a responsibility?
What do you feel my friends?

If you explore your homepage you’ll find a options for granting licencing rights. I just checked mine, and everything I have is copyrighted with no usage rights for anyone. Not sure how that stands up if someone wants to ignore the copyright.

“You just have been Flickered”
Not sure if I should be honored or offended, but….thanks…I guess.

It was highlighted in red, meaning it was a stupid hot-link. I have now edited my post to make this fact as clear as possible for you, Wes.

Thanks, I get it now. And yeah, sometimes I need things spelled out as clearly as possible, especially in the morning, and before my sixth coffee! I’ll read through this info asap.
