OSAKA—Nine men and a high school girl have been arrested after a riot following a rally by about 200 day laborers and their supporters in front of Nishinari Police Station in Osaka, the police said.
Participants in the rally, which started at about 5:30 p.m. Friday, said their gathering was intended to protest an alleged incident of police brutality in the area on the previous day.
Several hundred riot police officers were mobilized as participants began throwing empty cans, bicycles and stones at the police building at about 8:30 p.m. The riot subsided early Saturday.
Eight police officers were among nine people who suffered slight injuries.
According to the police, a 54-year-old unemployed man was questioned by police officers on Thursday afternoon after allegedly causing trouble at a nearby restaurant.
On Friday evening, the man visited the station with a leader of a support group to complain the police had assaulted him.
