5D Mk II coming ...
So my local camera shop tells me they are now taking advance orders for the long-awaited follow-up to the 5D. They say it’s out in August (July in Japan) and they don’t have a price yet.

As a Canon 1D MK111 owner I can promise you the mistake I will never make again is to get excited and make an advance order before I find out if it actually works.
Do someone of you know if Canon is going to do a new model of the Canon Mk3? I can’t wait to have a better camera, because I am very angry with my Nikon D3 coleagues that shots better quality photos than mine. Before to switch my gear in Nikon I’d like to see if Canon will do something new and how does it works. Ciao
Good the 5D mk II is finally comming, hopefully there will be a slight pricedrop again for the old 5D and then I buy …. the old 5D! (happy) I dont care much about the new 5D Mk II as the old 5D is just great and the new 5D MkII will be too expensive for me.

Antonino, web search for “1d mark iv rumors” brings up a ton of stupid rumors of a fall upgrade. Your guess is as good as mine as to true or false.
and here I am bringing up the rear yet again. I’m going to get the XT (I think that’s the 3D) sometime this summer. I’ll tell you something, guys and gals, when you’re not the lead dog, the view never changes…
UPDATE: sorry, the Xt is the 350D. I must learn to keep my numbers straight
Well, just because the XT comes out of the box stupid does not mean it has to stay that way. When you get it, be the first to make a hot rod out of it with CHDK and tell us all about it!
I was thinking of using CHDK to jack up my 630 and 640, but anything that involves getting into file directories and the rest of that computer stuff always scares the hell out of me. Computers are like my car: I can make them work, but I have no damn clue why they work.
If you download and save the original firmware, you can always start over by restoring the stupid factory settings.
Well the jokers at Canon better get their act together and release it fast…Nikon is kicking their round fat a@# real hard !
Akaky I have the 400D and I really like it. It’s pretty solid compared to the competition from Nikon, and it works great if you give it good glass :) Get the 450D if you can – just for sure add the battery grip so there’s more to hold on to. Tobie

Tobie, this is my first foray into dslrs so I’m going to keep it as simple as I can until I know what I’m doing with the thing. I wasnt going to buy one until next year, but a friend of my brother’s wants someone to shoot his daughter’s quinceanera party and both he and my brother prevailed on me to do it. The trouble is, of course, that the cheapest I can get the 350D here in the States is $390 (minus the lens) and my client, if you can call someone who shanghais you into something your client, can’t pay more than $300. When you add into that the flash, one for the dslr and one for my film slr, which I will also have to buy because I dont own one now, and five will get you ten that his kid’s birthday party is costing me more that it is him. I am still wondering why I didnt take up quilting as a hobby lo those many years ago.
Akaky,
Get a Canon, if you have glass for them. Remember whether it is a 40D or a 350 D there EF-S type lens requirement, basically you have a 1.6x focal multiplier effect.
Cheers
Akaky I hear the price of needles have gone up astronomically since the oil price boom had a knock-on effect on the steel industry, and besides they don’t make ‘em like they used to so now you have to replace your needles every 2 years. And thread – don’t even get me started on the cost of cotton because they have to ship the stuff from the cotton fields to the mills and then the spinners and and and … and don’t forget that dreaded occupational hazard, Quilters Cramp, I hear it can lay you low for weeks, fingers bent like a claw …
Tobie
Yeah, but the claw caused by quilters cramp is great for scaring little kids, you know.
Akaky, I’m shooting with the XT now. I can use either EF or EF-S lenses. Decent pictures, but I wouldn’t recommend shooting over 800 ISO.
Tobie/Anamitra/Brian, thanks for the info and sorry about not responding earlier. Is that 1.6x effect a real problem? I’m not sure I want to constantly do the math, but if I can get away with not shelling out the money for a new lens then that’s the way I’ll go, unless having to multiply over and over again turns into a pain in the rump. And do you have any recommendations vis-a-vis flashes? I was going to get a Canon Exlite 220 for the Elan (no bounce capability) and something with a bounce/swivel for the XT, but like I said, I’ve never used a flash unit before and it’s June 20th now and I have to September 20th to get one and learn how to use it, which means I need something fairly idiot proof.
Just keep in mind that wide-angle lenses will no be as wide, and zooms will be more zoomy. I just got a 17-40mm, and it is amazingly wide, even with the 1.6x crop factor. I have the original Canon 580EX flash. Works great.

Brian, Stoop, thanx. I think I’ll plunk the money down for a 18-55mm lens. I like using my telephoto and the extra magnification will be great for shooting high school football, but I’m not going to be shooting this birthday party from 200 feet away and I’m pretty sure that people are going to want some group shots of them with the birthday girl.
Stupidly agree with this 18-55 review.
Then go for the 17-55/2.8 IS lens, it is brilliant !
yeah and quite more expensive too…
