A Plug for the New Newseum in Washington

The new Newseum opened to the public on April 11, and I got in yesterday. The tickets are pricey - $22 each - but IMO well worth it. It has lot of good stuff on and for PJs. It has a really compelling and poignant interview with the wife of Bill Biggers (Bill was killed on 9/11 in New York). There is a whole room of Pulitzer Prize-winning photos and an apparently endless video of interviews with the shooters who took them (I could not stay to see all), there are lots of historical photos, information about the early days of photojournalism, and much, much more. They even had Chris Morris’ armored Time Magazine pickup truck from the former Yugoslavia, with shrapnel holes on it and broken (but not pierced) grass. If you are in DC you should definitely plan to go.

Moreover, plan to spend some time there. I went with a fellow media lawyer thinking we’d spend a couple of hours there, but after about three and a half hours we still had two more floors (out of six) to do, and I had to leave. If you ate lunch in the place, I could see easily spending 5-6 hours there and still not seeing it all.

I was planning on checking it out. Will do that soon; thanks for the info. Do they let big cameras in?

They let a D3 in. it’s pretty big by comparison with a rangefinder. I don’t know about, say, an 8×10 view camera though! But I don’t know why not.

I will say that to my considerable irritation they would not let me take my Swiss Army knife inside. I guess they thought I could use it to hijack the place and crash it into the Pentagon!

Yes, by big I meant your typical “professional looking” camera and bag. I can’t remember in which one but once they didn’t let me in a museum with “professional equipment”. Maybe at the Corcoran?

The Newseum looks like an interesting building too. Saw some good shots taken inside, this past week. Will definitely check it out.

Cheers,

Nacho
