About

Multilingual and cosmopolitan, Aasil Ahmad’s first forays in photography began while traveling the world. Inspired by the richness of human civilization and its tentative relationship with the natural world, he sought to capture these awesome phenomena with the simplicity of the modern camera. While studying the secrets of Fes, he expanded his world to include calligraphy, the ultimate form of artistic expression in the Islamic world. Upon returning to America, he continued his studies with Mohamed Zakariya, arguably the most celebrated American calligrapher of his time. Aasil lives in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area with his parents and kitty cats. He works as an economist at a private consulting firm. Despite his seemingly dry exterior, he possesses a true artist’s soul.

A Light Unto the Nations, Toronto, Canada

A few LSers are going to be displaying work at the Contact Festival in Toronto this month. I wanted to announce this exhibit that has some of my work, as well as Kitra Cahana, Tamara Abdul Hadi, and Steve Simon. Rochelle Michaels and Elizabeth Preiss are curators.

“A Light unto the Nations,” will open at the Lennox Contemporary Gallery, on May 10th, 2007.

This exhibit showcases eight photographers — four Muslims and four Jews who have submitted a total of 64 images, mostly from the Middle East.

These photos represent the work of photographers from the famous to the unknown, from professional to the amateur. They represent a wide range of styles including portraiture, conceptual, photojournalism, street and still life.

All images are arranged around the theme of tolerance and the consequences of intolerance. Hajj, Hezbollah, Neo Nazi Parades, ethnic, social and religious imagery with the underlying theme “we can teach love, or we can teach hate”
