ACR and Photomechanic color/star ratings

I use Photomechanic to edit + caption images, and normally use a colour rating to identify the keepers. I then open the RAW files in ACR (CS3), but that somehow removes all the colour/star ratings I set in Photomechanic.

Does anybody know a way to maintain the ratings when editing images in ACR? I checked ACR preferences but can’t seem to find anything related.

Cheers,

Olivier

this isnt the answer you’re looking for but… when in PM select all of your colour choiced ones and simply copy them to a new folder on your desktop. It’ll only take a moment or two to copy, then when in ACR you’ve got all your colour choiced files in one folder.
Saves a lot of double checking between two programmes.

actually, it pertains to a question I had asked a couple of weeks ago, re: how I can embed that type of sorting info so Lightroom will recognize it.
The answer someone gave me was to check the PM preferences, under IPTC/XMP and toggle all the “embed/write XMP” options as needed. For TIFF and RAW there is a pull-down option that says “always create and/or update XMP sidecar files.” Except, now Lightroom will see my stars – not my colors – but then when I try to open an image in ACR instead of exporting thru Lightroom, none of my LR RAW-processing instructions are being applied, although I saved the sidecar files in LR as well. So, still confused. But, maybe this answers your issue?

Katja, tried your solution, no difference.

okay – does anybody know why this works with Lightroom, and not in ACR??

Hi, first, you have to set up PM to “Add tag, color class and rating to IPTC/XMP for: All photos” (Files tab in prefs).
Second, Adobe doesn’t properly understand embedded IPTC/XMP in RAW files, so set it to “For TIFF-based RAW photos: Always create and update XMP sidecar file with IPTC4XMP”, and preferably NOT “Add embedded IPTC4XMP”.

For colour class to be compatible, you have to choose the same colours and labels in PM and Bridge (that is, in PM set the same colour for the first 5 classes as in Bridge, and in both set the same label for the colours). Only the first 5 classes are compatible with Adobe products.

This works for PM and adobe products, ACR,Bridge,Lightroom. All see each other’s changes in class or star ratings.

In Lightroom, just set up the same colour class labes (exact same, case-sensitive!) as in Bridge and Photomechanic.

I can confirm this works, just tried it today extensively.

Hope this helps, Frantisek

For more information, I recommend downloading the 4.5.x Photomechanic manual from camerabits website and reading it twice or thrice. It’s worth it.
