Advice on company gear allowance agreements

I’m hoping for some advice – there may be a possibility of negotiating to receive gear allowances from a major news organization to use and maintain personal equipment (rather than shooting with company kit). I would be grateful if a few people with experience of such agreements could comment on the fine detail of how they work, and if there are any particular benefits / pitfalls for photographers and the company that one should be aware of? Thanks.

I don’t know who you’re talking about, but it’s unlikely they’d be doing it for any reason other than saving money. Photo departments in major newspapers and agencies spend ridiculous amounts of money on gear – so much that it’s not even feasible to insure. And I guess it’s a cost that’s now probably ripe for the picking by management cost-cutters. My tip – without knowing any of the specifics – is to do your best to use issued kit.
