Dear friends
Everyday we will send out an update about Alexandra in an effort to ensure that everyone who has asked for information about her is kept informed. There has been a lot of speculation about Alex’s well being and we do not want to add to that – the information we will send everyone comes directly from the medical staff at the hospital. We are also trying to keep the need for telephone calls to Issa, John and Annie to a minimum so that they can focus on doing what they need to do for Alex in Jerusalem.
The situation has not changed in the last 24 hours, Alex remains sedated and in a coma. She is receiving the best neurological care available in Israel at Hadassah Hospital and in a few days the surgeons will start to make an assessment of her condition and make recommendations for future care.
For the next few days we do not expect much more news than this during the long and painful wait while Alex sleeps but as soon as we hear anything we will let you all know as soon as we can.
Please feel free to distribute this message to Alexandra’s close friends.
With love and best wishes
Issa Freij, John Torday and Gary Knight

Hmmm. I (and I suspect most others on this site) obviously was not in the information loop.
What happened to her?

Jeez, I just opened my Photo District News online from Thursday and saw the story. Aneurysm. Ugh. An awful thing to have happen. My thoughts and best hopes are with her. I have some personal experience with that (not me but someone close).
|
All the best to her close colleague’s from VII and hope she recovers soon.
My own father had it too, so i know how it is for others.
Good luck Alexandra

My mother suffered one as well at around the same age brought about by overexertion in the heat on a tennis court. My prayers for Alexandra and her family….its a reminder of how fragile we really are.
|
O!……
I feel terrible to hear about Alexandra. My family’s thoughts and prayers go out to her for a full and strong recovery.
The PDN mentioned a fund-raising drive to cover Alexandra’s medical costs. I couldn’t find anything at VII. Does anyone know how we can contribute?
Frank/Gary: if you read, please let me know how I can make a donation to the medical cost fund for Alexandra.
Our prayers and thoughts are with Alex.

Wouldn’t vii would have first rate medical coverage for its members, including air ambulance, etc?

I presume everyone else wants to go on the list?

thanks so much Mark for doing this!…cheers :))…bob

That would jibe with my mother’s anneurism Mark, but I do believe there is a genetic predisposition to this and it happens to females to males at a ratio of 3:2. Hopefully the annuerysm was small and it was clipped with relatively little bleeding. Her work on Arabic Women was presented in Virginia and I thought it was the best presentation of the evening…..a few of the images were so striking that I dwelled on them for days, wondering exactly how she was able to create something that unique.

Hello everyone. We are currently focused on trying to help the Alex and her family in any way possible, so please bear with us. As many of you may know, Alex had surgery on Thursday morning to stop bleeding in her brain. The operation was successful and she is currently in a medically induced coma. The doctors have done this in order to give her the best chance for recovery. We should have more information in a few days.
In the meantime, if any of you would like to help Alex and her family deal with the medical costs involved, contributions can be made through VII. Please send your support to VII Photo, 920 Abbott Kinney Blvd, Venice, CA 90291. Please make the check out to VII Photo with the words “Alex Boulat Fund” in the memo. Contributions can also be sent to us via paypal to frank@viiphoto.com (again, indicate that the money is for the Alex Boulat Fund).
Alex is being tended to by an amazing team of doctors and medical staff. We couldn’t ask for anything more at this point.
Thank you all for your prayers and best wishes. This means a lot to Alex’s family.
Best,
Frank Evers

Very sad news Frank, I think that we are all going to have to come together as a community to help here, I have PMed you with several suggestions and I promise to do everything that I can to help out. Like many photographers I myself have no insurance and although I do not know for certain what Alexandra’s situation is, from the way you are describing this there is going to be a very long rehabilitation required and even the best insurance may not cover that— this all brings home to me my mother’s brain injury, and it is particuarly painful for me, so I would like to do what I can.
|
thanks Frank and Mark.
Mark please add me to the list.

Mark, add me to the list. I have also sent a contribution.

I sent money and have asked a friend who writes a business photography blog to mention this thread and the situation. Hopefully, other photographers can read about Alexandra and contribute.
|
Mark, please add my name to the list. All the best to Alex, I’m glad to hear she’s in good hands and being taken care of. I wish her family courage and strength in this difficult situation.
Love,

We are beginning to receive funds into the paypal account and have received checks for Alex. I have also been receiving emails with suggestions for how else we might be able to support Alex. I am sharing these with the family and will let you know what they want to do.
Thanks so much for your generosity and support.

Would somebody be kind enough to say what costs need to be met, what sort of sums we are talking about, and what is (or is not) covered by personal medical insurance (if there is any) or reciprocal social security agreements between France and Israel (if such things exist).
|
I do not have any exact information at this time…the family is with Alex and we are waiting for further instructions from them. They are aware that we have begun to collect money to help Alex defray her medical expenses, whatever they end up being.

This is very sad news. I was just at the VII seminar in London a month or so ago and really enjoyed her talk. She also seemed like a very nice person.

If the PDN story is correct, there is some reason for optomism. I have a little experience with this issue. Some years ago a lovely woman I was dating suffered a burst aneurysm while I was talking to her on the phone (no kidding). Unfortunately she did not survive, but in the ensuing several days in the hospital I learned a lot about this phenomenon.
An aneurysm is a malformed blood vessel formation which can burst under pressure. Hence heat and physical activity can have an effect. Other things can as well, such as drugs which constrict blood vessel walls. My friend had just started a drug to help her beat smoking, which among other things raises the blood pressure to simulate a nicotine hit. The docs said this might have been a factor in precipitating the bursting.
On the other hand, smoking also increases the chance of an aneurysm bursting. So the apparent lesson would be, if you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do, quit without drugs.
The key to success is keeping blood flowing to all parts of the brain before and after the surgery, restoring the blood vessel to a functioning, secure mode, and avoiding damage to other parts of the brain. The last tactic is what the coma is all about. Relaxing the brain can help avoid the swelling that heightens such a risk.
Needless to say, brain surgery is a huge trauma which stimulates swelling, so keeping swelling down is a critical part of this. The induced coma part is hard on the family as they want to connect with the patient. But the patient is best off being off in lala land with no external neural stimulation. On the other hand my friend regained consciousness once before she died, and her children were there, which meant a lot to them I understand.
So if the surgeons think they repaired the blood vessels, that is very good news. I was told it was like putting on a new car muffler. If you can connect it to the exhaust piping, you are in good shape. If the exhaust piping crumbles apart, then you’ve got bigger problems.
Yes, I was told that it does tend to be genetic. So be careful, Andy. It’s not too late to mend your ways! :-)

All the best for a speedy and successful recovery, John Fulton.

What Imants says!
Wishing her strenght!

Thinking positive. Hope Alex is soon back behind the camera where she belongs and this nightmare is just a distant memory.

Good job Mark, thanks for doing this for us.
|
thank you Mark for being so thoughtful…
|
I am sorry if I missed anyone…it was not intentional.
Anyway I dropped of the card directly to the ward.
I spoke to a doctor and asked how Alexandra was and he told me she was stable but still in a coma. They did seem optimistic.
I declined their offer to visit Alexandra in the ward as I felt it inappropriate as I don’t know her personally. I met her very briefly while talking to another photographer in Kosovo way back in 1998.
|
I’m sorry I read the thread too late to have my name added to the card. I met Alexandra two Summers ago in Tuscany and was one of her students at the TPW workshop. She is a great person, full of strenght, life and humanity. Her advice was decisive and it changed my way of seeing and doing photography. She has been very precious to me since then, even if we haven’t talked anymore. I wish her all my best and have her in my thoughts. If you think about sending her another card, please add me to the list.

Wow, what awful news. Thank you Bruno for informing all of us. I don’t personally know Alexandra, but my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family members. If its not too late, please sign my name to the card, as well. Best wishes to Alexandra, and for a speedy recovery.

Dear friends of Alex
This morning Annie, Issa and some of Alex’s close friends met with the hospital staff. The doctors are being cautious and have decided to give Alexandra as much time as she needs to rest. They are in no hurry to try to bring her to conciousness again.
The doctors cannot put a date on when they will next do anything.
This may mean that there will be nothing to report for a while – but no one should be concerned by this -everyone will be kept informed as and when there is a new development
It has been a harrowing week but Annie has been characteristically strong. One wonderful blessing has been the nightly gatherings over dinner with friends who continue to offer invaluable support. Another has been the steady flow of messages into Jerusalem. We should emphasise how important all the support from Alex’s friends has been to Annie and Issa.
Best wishes

Latest, from today I think;
Dear friends of Alex,
There has not been any significant change in Alexandra’s condition for
the last few days as she remains in a coma, although there have been
some minor operations to make her more comfortable.
Her situation remains critical but stable.
There is unlikely to be any news for the next few days but we will
keep you informed as soon as there are any new developments.
Best wishes
|
Lets hope for the best and please, do keep us informed.
|
thanks for the update Dave……
|
Thanks, Dave, for the information. My thoughts are with her and her family.
|
Thank you Dave for keeping everyone informed…
|
I also hope that Alexandra makes a full and speedy recovery.

any news about alexandra??
|
Dear Friends of Alex,
Alex was medically repatriated back to France on Monday evening and is currently in the neurosurgery department at Lariboisière Hospital in Paris. There has been no change in her overall condition – she remains in a coma but is stable. Her mother Annie and sister Antoinette are at her side.
The decision to move Alex was made after consultation between doctors in France and Israel. French doctors will this week examine her and make an assessment of her condition. At this time, Alex is in an isolation unit and is not able to receive visitors apart from Annie and Antoinette. So please keep that in mind.
A big thank you to everyone who has sent messages of support and love to Alex, her family and to Issa. We will provide another update as soon as we have more news, possibly at the end of the week.
Regards

Thats good news Frank…….please keep us updated if its appropriate.

Thanks Frank for the update. Keep up posted.
all the best,
Bob and Marina

Thanks for the news, it’s good to be updated, and I’m glad that Alexandra’s relatives are by her side: you never know, sometimes love and care can give unexpected results.
On my behalf, for what it’s worth, all I can do is try to send some “positive waves” in Alexandra’s direction.
|
I would like to wish all the best to Alex!

God, I had no idea something happened to Alexandra. I knew her in the old days when she was at SIPA, Jesus, that was ten years ago. I ‘s sure would like to know if she’s got better since she is back in France.
Good luck Alex.
