I’m available for freelance work.

I am currently working as freelance photographer based in Louisville, Kentucky. I have worked as a photojournalism teacher and tour guide in Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia, and as a photo editor on the daily desk and for the winter Olympics coverage at MSNBC.com. There I was involved in editing images for the front cover of stories, including the execution of Sadam Hussein, the Enron case, daily and overall “Best of Olympics” photo pics, and on occasion co-edited MSNBC’s “Week In Pictures.” I’ve also worked as a photo intern for The Indianapolis Star, The Jackson Hole News and Guide, for the Ft. Knox military, and as staff photographer and reporter for the College Heights Herald. I have a degree in photojournalism and cultural anthropology from Western Kentucky University.

Awards and participation include:
2005 – Mountain Workshops volunteer, Lawrenceburg, Ky.,
2004 – 3rd place feature, Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association,
2004 – 2nd place photo story, Wyoming Press Association,
2004 – Mountain Workshops, Lebanon, Ky., editing workshop with Bill Luster,

Backpacking with a laptop

I am going to Southeast Asia for 3 months to one year. I will be backpacking through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. If I love it, I will stay and teach English, and try to get some freelance photo work on the side. I am thinking of bringing a laptop, but backpacking with one sounds…well, not so comforting. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it worth it to bring one since I shoot digital? I appreciate any feedback.
