Another kick in the groin for the industry

Getty has just announced they have bought Scoopt (www.scoopt.com),an entity aimed at marketing the ‘citizen journalist’

While it’s pretty clear much of the content is crap,by purchasing this company Getty is acknowledging the value
in crowd sourcing and is,in my opinion, one more nail in the coffin for photographers rooted in traditional
marketing/distribution methods.

On the surface, the material showcased is tabloid-type content but I think we are only seeing the narrow edge of the wedge.

That’s really all we needed… Just caught it now. This trend will probably be accelerating industry wide… Oh, well… Thanks for posting this Mark.

Cheers,

Yes, but it seems to me that as long as you’re not also shooting crap, then it’s not really a threat?

Anti-trust violation or not? “laws prohibit business practices that unreasonably deprive consumers of the benefits of competition, resulting in higher prices for inferior products and services”. Guess it depends of the definition of “unreasonable” and, “inferior” which is endlessly debatable as perception, trend, sales and packaging defines that, in terms of the “economic world” of photography or any creative process.

Let’s hope the citizens at least insist upon getting paid a decent wage, if they do it for free then pros will cease to even be attractive enough to be, well, you guys said it, not me…..lol

hmmm, Angela, interesting anti-trust slant.

There are a problem that exists at this time with the anti trust laws in the US. The one that applies to visual artists is the inability (prohibition by law) to ban together to set prices without forming a union.

IPA wants to change this and make an exception in part precisely due to the reason you state and also because of negative results that can occur with unions in the US (think Hoffa here or even college teacher unions that are unregulated and set the same wages for non-trained workers and trained workers alike.)

I see you have edited now, but I still agree with your original premise…

Exactly.

I agree with that, Stuart and Lance, but it can still drive prices down if a profession allows it to.
