I think Ill be heading over to Delhi on the 10th hopefully try to get a train up to Allahabad on the 11th, and shoot through the 15th. Not really sure about the train, or where to stay…

i’m heading there on the twelfth and will be staying in the second tent on the left. if i’m not in when you drop by, pop down to the river bank, i’m sure you’ll find me there.

in short, i have no idea about where to stay. there are rumours of air-conditioned tents and the festival being attended by madonna and pierce brosnan. i suggest calling either one of those, i’m sure they’ll look after you.

Ben,
You can try to fly in from Delhi, it is LOT more convenient then the train…I went there a few years ago, I had a decent hotel, not far form the river near the main bridge, I will look in my “archive” if I can find the name of the damn place…I went in Feb-March 2002, on assignment for Jamie at Newsweek…he might be able to locate the folder with my expenses and thus the hotel number…

during the maha kumbh mela in 2001, i stayed at the kanha shyam….http://www.hotelkanhashyam.com/...which is about 1/2 mile from the pontoon bridges that take you to the center of the encampment. most of the foreign press covering that event was staying there…i think a single cost me about $40 per night…probably higher now. but there are a number of other hotels in the vicinity…that are less expensive.

Hey,
I just got back from there and stayed at a fine place called Hotel Yatrik. phones: 2260921, 2260922 or 2260923. Air Sahara flys there directly but not every day and its probably going to be fully booked. The other option is to fly to Varanasi and drive there which takes a few hours but its faster then the trains. Have fun! ami
