About

Avaaz.org is a community of global citizens who take action on the major issues facing the world today. Our aim is to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people — and not just political elites and unaccountable corporations — shape global decisions. Avaaz.org members are taking action for a more just and peaceful world and a vision of globalization with a human face.

In our interconnected world, the actions of political leaders and corporations are having a profound impact on all of us. To match the power and reach of global leaders and borderless corporations, Avaaz.org members are building a powerful movement of citizens without borders. As citizens without borders, we might not have the resources of governments, corporations or the media, but working together we can bring together millions of people around the world and make global public opinion really count on major global issues like poverty, climate change, human rights and global security.

Using the latest technology, Avaaz.org empowers ordinary people from every corner of the globe to directly contact key global decision-makers, corporations and the media. By signing up to receive updates from Avaaz.org, members receive emails and text messages alerting them to new campaigns and opportunities to act online and offline, and to make a real difference on pressing global issues.

Radio contacts for Taliban territory in Afgh/Pak

Hi, we’re relatively new to Lightstalkers. In short, we are looking for contacts with radio stations in areas where the Taliban has a great deal of support, particularly in the North West Frontier Province in Pakistan AND Ghazni Province or Kandahar in Afghanistan.

The longer story is that I work for Avaaz.org which is a community of 1.2 million global citizens who take action on the major issues facing the world today. Our aim is to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people – and not just political elites and unaccountable corporations – shape global decisions. Our past campaigns include co-sponsoring the new UK Foreign Secretary’s first speech (http://www.avaaz.org/en/miliband_webcast/) and a billboard/petition campaign for ‘real peace talks’ in the Middle East (http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_the_clash/).

We recently launched a campaign demanding that the Taliban free unharmed the South Korean hostages being held in Afghanistan. (see: http://www.avaaz.org/en/honour_the_afghan_code/) The campaign demands that the Taliban follow their own Afghan Pashtunwali code, a principle that requires “hospitality to all, especially guests and strangers.” This kidnapping is a clear violation of the code, offending the weary people of Afghanistan on whom they depend. Our petition has reached almost 85,000 signatories and we are looking to deliver it through our own private channels.

We are also exploring ‘delivering’ the petition via a billboard and/or radio stations in Ghazni Province or Kandahar OR in the NW Frontier Province of Pakistan. Lightstalker members have given us helpful leads re the billboard angle but we still need contacts at radio stations. Any dice?

We would be most appreciative. Please contact Iain Keith ASAP at iain@avaaz.org.

Many thanks in advance, Ben
