Be aware, Big Brother is Watching...here.

Just back from the Foundry Workshop, and heard something disturbing from a friend, that I thought some LS should be aware…

My friend, a fellow LS, was crossing the border to some sensitive area, and the border agent went and checked out on him/her, and they came to this site and find his/her name and profile and learned that he/she is a journalist, and so promptly denied him/her entry…

Kind of make me question if I should hide/delete my profile here as well….

what i wanna know is.. what about the Big Sister?

by Ana Elisa Fuentes | 03 Jul 2008 19:07 | Bavaria, Germany |
What could the agent read on the entry as to take that decision? That’s very weird…

by Agustin Fernandez | 03 Jul 2008 19:07 | Montevideo, Uruguay |
Why do you think I deleted my real name here and use this one instead? Big Stupid Family, naturally.

by Stupid Photographer | 03 Jul 2008 20:07 (ed. Jul 3 2008) | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
I know this person too… and yes… it does happen that certain places dont want journalists covering their shady government… and these days, LS is the first thing that pops up if you google my name… so yes.. very easy to get barred due to having an LS sight… but for that matter, any website at all with your work and name… so yer kinda screwed no matter what ya do….

STOOP:

but, that cannot cannot possibly be the logic why you’ve remained anonymous…if it is, that i’m profoundly disappointed…and i love u, u know that…but since when does behaving by the strictures of mindspeak-think become a “reasonable” action…and when should we abide by that (hiding ourselves) because of tyranny?...i mean, listen:

Teru, the founder, remains name-face-forward as testimony to what we all should stand for…not to mention Ajmal’s life and what that represents….that young man never once hid his identity…

why do you think i’ve also tried to be frank with my comments (for good and ill) and my identity…lots of my comments here too, im sure, have costs me gigs, but I aint hiding behind anything…i dont think “stupid photographer” is hiding cause i think that person makes sense, but I didnt think you did this cause you were afraid…are you afraid?....i thought you were the very antithesis of that king of groupthink….i differentiate between Stupid Photographer and the real You: 2 people, 2 identities, for different purposes, none of which had to do with anonymity….or that’s how ive always thought about this person (stoop)..

i always loved your nom de plume, just as i love most of what you write and your deep stupidity (read: intelligence) and catholic (read: universal, not the religion) experience…

but, we’re traceable everywhere, so when does web anonymity equate protecting our selves or standing up??...

big sis and big bro and big uncle and big aunt are watching us everywhere and not just at LS, so it seems almost ridiculous to remove identity, unless it’s part of a persona (which is what Stupid Photographer is for me)....i dont want to know who Stupid is, cause Stupid is as Stupid is (or was that does ;)) ), but Stupid’s real life counter part i trust is also a member here who is unafraid to at least have an identity, even if he/she never comments….

make sense?...

It’s all sorts of stupid reasons, as with everything. Including fear and fearlessness. :-)

Far too many people think the Web is some private place where they can say off-the-wall things and no one will ever notice. I know that there are photographers who have not gotten work because of thoughtless postings they have made on the Web. In fact I myself got into an problematic work situation by virtue of something I said here on Lightstalkers. Some people may think that is unfair, but one cannot be irresponsible in one public segment of their lives and expect it not to have an impact elsewhere.

People get Googled all the time, particularly photographers. Whenever I seek permission to shoot in a certain non-public place I assume that I am going to get Googled, and almost always find that I have been. Things you say on Lightstalkers and your own Web site will almost cetainly be seen by the gatekeepers whose permission you seek.
So consider that as you you go through life.

But, having said that, being a photojournalist should never disqualify you for passage that is otherwise available to others.

thankfully there is an emerging comedian with my name who comes up on google! and the random calls i occasionally get presumably for him (i live in east hollywood area) are few and far between.

Umm, surely, if you google any journalist then you’re going to find them, LS or no? Being “optimised” on google is important in marketing oneself… If I google Dave Walsh I turn up as four of the top 10 hits.

Oh, and what Neal said.

We should all change our names to Rick Roll then, that’ll learn em.

A stupid pussy to be exact, hero Imants.

by Stupid Photographer | 04 Jul 2008 12:07 | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
nahh I was thinking more on the lines of being a gall gnat,

by Imants | 04 Jul 2008 12:07 | The Boneyard, Australia |
For years, I have taken for granted the idea that we are constantly watched, especially if our ideas run counter to the “dominant” culture. There is something stupidly liberating in that realization, because it becomes so stupidly normal that one can cease to worry about it, and accept the fact that one will be able to work some jobs and will be blocked from others, or have to work ten times as hard to find the way round.

I think Neal is absolutely correct about having to take responsibility for what we say and write on the net and ponder the virtues of becoming a stupid gall gnat living at the Holy See, they seem to have a way of staying above the fray!

The moment we start slinking around in the shadows, they (the conspiracy, the fearful populace, the mob, the moral minority or whoever) will have won.

by Dave Walsh | 06 Jul 2008 01:07 | Tokyo, Japan |
Well, there are times for stupid slinking. Ask anyone who slinked in and out of say Burma lately, with otherwise not gonna have them snaps.

by Stupid Photographer | 06 Jul 2008 01:07 (ed. Jul 6 2008) | Holy Smokes, Holy See |
That’s a fair point, and I accept it!

by Dave Walsh | 06 Jul 2008 02:07 | Tokyo, Japan |
its not quite worked out yet as google takes a while to figure out certain changes but this is why i stopped using my name online.

it’s not about being watched, its about uneducated border guards having internet access and being able to type in the name from your passport into the internet. its nice to think that we as photographers or any sort of journalist have a right to be places but it has long been a practice for journalist to get into areas by claiming not to be journalists. this is no longer as easy as it once was now that we all can be googled.

and its not about hiding either, its just about fooling the brainless machines, i still have the same initials and a photo of my self on here. any inteilligent person who actually knows me can figure it out but someone just typing my given name in is not going to come across this.
