Beer spots all over the world

I know it may sound strange ( or maybe not at all :) but I’m looking for the places where you can drink beer. It doesn’t have to be a bar, it can be whatever, parks, beaches, flats and other strange places. Would be good if such location could be specific for the country of shooting. I’m starting this strange project soon and I need tips becouse I haven’t been in many of these countries. One important thing is that I will have to shoot it in May-June. Thank you for inspiration!!!
List of countries:

Austria
Belgium
Canada
Czech Republic
Denmark
France
Germany
Honduras
Netherlands
Iceland
Ireland
Israel
Spain
UK
USA

You can go to one place in DC and get some 1000 beers from all over the world…no kidding! Why leave your stool? Check it out when you are next in Washington, it’s the Brickskeller.

Any smarty ever try all 1kb?

Rafal,

I’m not sure how long you are planning to work on this, but both Germany and the south of the Netherlands have HUGE beer halls during carnaval (11/11 it officialy starts and ends at 28/2 2009), where people just stand, sit, hang, crawl and drink…beer.

lots of fun and succes!

Well, as for Germany there some occasions that come to my mind e.g. on Ascension day, Father´s Day in Germany, people (mostly men, some fathers) use to roam around on tractors, bikes etc. and all pull a good load of beer on a trailer. Or they drift downriver on a raft, with lots of beer “under deck”. Another occasion are the small Dorffests, village parties, when all the village just sits together with a beer and has a good time. Much more authentic imho than any of the big beerfests (e.g. Oktoberfest).

Sounds like a fun project Rafal. Be sure to look me up when you come to the UK and I’ll model for you drinking a ‘yard of ale’ in my local pub… http://www.tollemacheharrington.com. Shame you don’t have Australia on the list-former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke was at one time the world record holder, for fastest skulling of a yard of beer.
These days I prefer red wine-but don’t ask me to drink a yard glass of that!

I used to work at Anchor Brewing Company in San Francisco. (Maker of Anchor Steam)

Little known fact… you can go there and get a free tour, and try all the different kinds of brew for free!!!! Yes I said free. And I dont mean some shitty 2 oz sipper cups either…

The staff is awesome, down to earth, real SF locals and are a blast to toss some back with. All of em are artists of some sort or other.

Also, (this just gets better and better) the owner, Fritz Maytag, appreciates photography, and hired a badass (damn, cant remember his name right now) to shoot the place years ago, and so one of the hallways is like a photo museum, with amazing giant black and white prints….

Enjoy!!

How can you possibly do a project on beer and not come to Australia?

Its just not right…..

(Hehehehehehehehehe!)

Ireland – good christ, I wouldn’t know where to start!

by Dave Walsh | 08 Apr 2008 08:04 | Dublin, Ireland |
Germany – Oktoberfest strangely on in September.
Spain – constantly during the summer, beach, street. The guys selling cans on the weekend on the street/beach
Ireland – horse racing and music festivals and the back of the bus on saturday night, might be a change from the ubiquitous pub

Hi Rafal, You may be interested to know that Antonin Kratochvil did a story on beer not too long ago. I can’t find anything on it online right now, but I’m sure if you dig, it’ll turn up.

by Amber Maitland | 08 Apr 2008 09:04 |
You want the real Irish experience, then hit some of the summer festivals in County Clare.

by Dave Walsh | 08 Apr 2008 09:04 | Dublin, Ireland |
Rafal – If you come to Australia – steer clear of darwin – we can’t drink beer in public places except on designated days,Hate to see you rock up on the wrong day!
You would want to go to the little creatures Brewey in Fremantle ,Western Australia , the place has great beer and great light.

by Glenn Campbell | 08 Apr 2008 13:04 | Darwin, Australia |
Yeah but Glenn, don’t Darwinians drink more beer per capita than in any other city in the world?

Good reason not to let people drink in public places except on designated days, otherwise the entire town would be constantly off their heads!

by lisa hogben | 08 Apr 2008 13:04 | sydney, Australia |
You need to come to Colorado. This is the “Nappa Vally of micro-breweries”. You practically trip over small and craft breweries here.

by Jonathan Castner | 08 Apr 2008 17:04 | Denver, Colorado, United States |
Thank you all for all the massive response! LS is definitely good place for the post like mine :)
Pity I cant include Australia in my trip and many other countries as well, but it doesn’t depend on me. I have at least few weeks before I start so I wait for more inspiration. Thanks again for your help.

by Rafal Milach | 09 Apr 2008 07:04 | Warsaw, Poland |
Designated days for drinking in Public are now
Anzac day, Territory day , Christmas day , boxing day and any day whose name ends with a Y .
Yes Lisa The whole town is off their heads – thats how they sell all the highrise apartments that are shooting up all over the place!

by Glenn Campbell | 09 Apr 2008 10:04 | Darwin, Australia |
Hi Rafal

We go for a beer in vienna in may right? in any case if u are interested China has the largest population of beer drinker in the world , well numerically is easy to understand it but chinese loves their Qindgao beer, they have also an “october” festival which is held on the end of August…. in Qindgao, there u will see many people drinking (Worste than munich perhaps) ....
i thought u loved Vodka tough..

we’ll catch up in Vienna for sure , so see you there,

Glenn, sorry but Australia is not included :)

it’s a bit off your road but there is a roof top night club with good live soukous (rumba) music on victory plaza, kinshasa. it’s just between the charismatic church and the disco, the beer is cold but watch out for the night fighters…

by john robinson | 10 Apr 2008 07:04 | kwazulu-natal, South Africa |
John
pity I cant come to check the night fighters and cold beer :),

Daniele I will certainly visit you in Shanghai but Im afraid not with this project… or maybe who knows, see you in Vienna anyway

any ideas for Honduras or Israel?

by Rafal Milach | 11 Apr 2008 21:04 | Warsaw, Poland |
In Denmark Christiania i Copenhagen is a great spot. Any harbour, wievpoint, terrasse, rooftop, park or sunny spot is where you will find the danes with a beer. There has been a blooming in microbreweries all over the contry the last years so lots of good stuff there as well.

In Israel the best place i can think about is in the dessert overlooking the dead sea..

by Ty Stange | 12 Apr 2008 08:04 | Copenhagen, Denmark |
The best beer I ever tasted was cuban. Go to Havanna and slurp down a few cans of Buccanero. It even puts czech pilsner to shame.

by Shahriar Nouri | 12 Apr 2008 09:04 | Kathmandu, Nepal |
There’s a nice place here in Cairo in a church, but that’s not on your list. I once saw Dutch student societies play a game where each team has to drink their keg of beer, then take an opposing team’s keg by whatever means available. Very messy.

by John Perkins | 12 Apr 2008 17:04 | Cairo, Egypt |
i’ve gotta second jonathan’s vote for colorado in the us. it is crawling with craft beers and good places to drink. the beers are strong…check the offerings from great divide or the tenfidy or gordon from oskar blues…the altitude enhances the effect.

by Mark Manger | 12 Apr 2008 23:04 | Denver, United States |
In Vienna you definitely should go to the Schweizerhaus beer garden, which is in the Prater amusement park (where the giant ferris wheel is, known as the ‘Reisenrad’), a Viennese institution, good Czech Budweiser on tap (for a long time during the cold war probably the only place to get this beer outside Czechoslovakia) and lots of pig to eat!

by Paul KISS | 13 Apr 2008 09:04 | London, United Kingdom |
and, still in Vienna, try the ‘Lukas’ bar, Schönlaterngasse 2 in the center… plenty other good bars in that lovely little street.. and if very late or Lukas is closed go to Bane’s Bar, Köllnerhofgasse 3 still in the center, where you’ll see all kinds of creatures of the Vienna night!

In Prague go for Kolkovna. They have the best draft Pilsen I have ever had.

In Bremen, Germany, I was quite impressed by the beer they brew in Schüttinger microbrewery.

Daniele is right about Chinese Qingdao. Whenever I wanted to feel like home I went out and had a couple of Qingdaos.

Hi
In belgium you Should go to The Delirium Café http://www.deliriumcafe.be you will find More than 2000 beers .For a less touristique bar you should go to the
Chez Moeder Lambic Rue de Savoie 68

romania has some traditions in beer-drinking too, beer-festivals roam around the country during the whole summer-season… drop a line if you need more info

by Lucian Stanescu | 16 Apr 2008 07:04 | Brussels, Belgium |
Sadly, I can never remember the names of the good bars I visit for some reason. The only one that sticks out in my mind right now from your list is Nanuchka in Tel Aviv. Check this site out, this is where I usually go to for suggestions when I pop into a new city:

Rafal, try in Holland the amateur soccer teams, after training and after matches they are known for their heavy drinking among teammates.
also any student association would work, but perhaps not so interesting.

And just remembered that in the Eastern part of the country, youngesters (from 10-11 onwards) have these sheds in the fields called ‘Bier Keten’ (beer sheds) where they hang out, and drink beer… good luck
cheers,
Marc

Tommy, I plan to come to San Antonio, at the beginning of June, are you there at the time?
Good idea Marc, I will check it out I can imagine all these guys from Hans van der Meer’s pictures going for beer :)
Reudiger, is rafting a common spot for beer? I plan to visit Munich as well, it can be interesting,
Thank you everybody for good tips

by Rafal Milach | 16 Apr 2008 21:04 | Warsaw, Poland |
Hi Rafa

for Indonesia, you can visit Bali a paradise island, in every corner people enjoy the beer

cheers

Hey Rafal, I have trouble knowing where I will be from day to day so it’s hard to say for June but definitely let me know when you are coming and I will be more than happy to show you around!

by Tommy Huynh | 17 Apr 2008 07:04 | San Antonio, United States |
As far as the best Pilsner in Prague goes, Kolkovna isn’t bad, but there are better. A few that come to mind are U Tygra, U Pinkasu, U Jelinku, U Hrocha and Bredovsky Dvur…Let me know when you’ll be here and we’ll go for for a couple…

by Martin Mraz | 17 Apr 2008 08:04 | Prague, Czech Republic |
Rafal,
if you visit Munich you have to go to the “Hofbräuhaus”. It´s a very old beerhaal where nowadays all the american and japanese tourist go.
They do rafting because of the former tradition, were they used the river to transport down the lumber. Nowadays they do this more or less for the tourist. They allways have a lttle jazzband and a barrel of beer on the raft.
And while you are in mUnich you should visit the kiosk at the “Reichenbachbrücke” (a bridge over the river Isar) Its a small kiosk and it lifes tremedously good just by selling beer to the homeless of MUnich. THe homeless spend all their socialmoney they get at that kiosk. The owners of that kiosk close down for winter and overwinter with the money they earnd from the homeless from october to march in the south of europe.

Ah yes, Belgium is definitely the place to toss down a few. About five years ago I spent a US Thanksgiving Holiday in Brussels (took train up from Paris) where I met a buddy and…whew…some awesome brew spots there! Can’t remember any names, though. I can’t remember much else either….

We are doing this project now , me and Bart Pogoda ( http://www.lightstalkers.org/bartpogoda ) , so hints will still be appreciated here.
We would love to visit your favourite local watering hole, but PLEASE NOTE , we have to stick to our fixed itinerary , no matter how much we would like to shoot in some remote bar in Australian outback or Ethiopian brothel. The route is in a link below, it is not complete, after Amsterdam we continue into Belgium and Germany.

Bourbon Street of course, and you can legally drink here in Louisiana in the street here, unlike most places in the US!

Mexico is a big, beer drinking country. Most common in the north, where beer culture is strongest, is the carne asada. You´ll see groups of compadres on Saturday afternoon or sundays in a shady spot at the side of the road, talking and swilling their favorite brand: Tecate, Carta Blanca, Modelo, Victoria, and so forth, even, yuk, Budweiser and Bud light.

Most indigenous groups drink a mildly alcoholic beverage, though it can be made to ferment more, made from corn, tesgüino.

Salud!

yes, if you come to brussels/belgium, let us know and we’ll have a beer (at least) with Ligthstalkers pals !
