Does anybody have any experience shooting at clubs, massage palors etc in Phnom Phen? I am shooting a story for a women’s magazine on the sex slaves in Cambodia…the main focus of the story is Cambodian human rights activist Somaly Mam…but i would really like to shoot in some clubs to actually show a glimpse of what goes on
or does anyone know a good fixer that could take me around…I am a little blond chic totally jetlagged with a hassleblad, nikon and video camera…would like this shoot to go as smoothly as possible!

HI Jennifer,
I’m going to head out to Cambodia in Jan. Did you find a good fixer or any contacts you could recommend?
Cheers,
Christina

Good luck… I escaped followed by bodyguards of a drunk chinese… Or you can try the Antoine d’Agata/total immersion method…
Try and see Rithy Panh’s movie “Le papier ne peut pas envelopper la braise” (2007) (Paper Cannot Wrap Up Embers)
(and please do a thorough double check on Mam Somaly)

The old school Khmer journos hang out “under the tamarind tree” at the cluster of sidewalk coffee and snack shops opposite the gate to the old National Assembly. (NE Corner of St 240 and Sothearos)
I haven’t lived in PP since the 90s, but they were still all there when I was visiting a couple of years ago. You might need a Khmer to make an introduction, but those guys know all. If you don’t find a fixer, they should be able to hook you up.
