Can you argue with a question?
|
Is this post a place where people should only post questions?
Perhaps respond to posted questions with other questions?
How hard is it to phrase statements as questions to stimulate more thinking and questioning in others?
Socratic Seminar?
Do certain questions ultimately lead to even better ones?
Is the intricate use of language, question, and global conversation what is ultimately necessary to make the world a better place for humanity?
Will some submitted questions be added to the continuously growing/changing pool of questions that are randomly sampled here?
Can you argue with a question?

Remember Rosa Parks?
How are those remembered who broke the law to help American slaves escape to freedom?
How are those remembered who opposed Civil Rights or Women’s Suffrage? Are they on the wrong side of history?
Are certain laws inherently unjust and tyrannical?
Is it my duty as a responsible US citizen to disobey any laws that are unjust and tyrannical?
Whose interests does the US travel ban on Cuba serve? Does it serve the many or the few? Justice or tyranny?
How will those who support the US travel ban on Cuba be remembered in 20 years?
Will they be remembered as being on the wrong side of history like those who opposed Civil Rights or Women’s Suffrage?
How will those who support the Iraq War be remembered in 20 years?
Does the US Constitution protect my rights to freely travel wherever I choose?
Isn’t the Cold War over?
Would the world be a better place if people started asking each other more questions instead of telling each other what to think or believe?
Can you argue with a question?

Interesting questions, but not the right ones to ask. acts of civil disobedience had been going on for some time, including refusal to go to the back of the bus, before Rosa ever sat down. The difference is that she was married to an activist. So the question should be, “Does this make her any less of a hero?” Personally, I say no, but it makes all the other unsung activist greater ones.

patrick,do you know the apocryphal story about the philosophy student at oxford university? he recieved a first class honours degree, yet in his final exam he only wrote one sentence.the question posed was “is this a question?”. his reply was “is this an answer?”.

can you really shit on Rosa Parks without feeling morally reprehensible?
|
Not attempting to shit on Rosa. That level of strength and courage we should all aspire to. My comments were actually an attempt to give the proper respect to all the activists that don’t get a stamp or a presidential eulogy.
|
The Oxford story had a question that was a little more complex than just “Is this a question?” (The answer is obviously “yes”) The exam question was “If this is a question, answer it.” And the student wrote” “If this is an answer, mark it.”

how did i know you were american? why are american’s always so touchy? how i created offence when none was intended and i was only responding in the spirit of the questions asked, will i ever know? all those unsung heroes of course deserve their day in the sun… however, if a tree has no leaves or branches is it still a tree?? if one is not recognised for one’s work is it still not fufilling to the worker? if thanks is all anyone ever did anything for, wouldn’t we all be in a hell of a lot of trouble? Isn’t detracting from the exalted praise and pubic recognition of Rosa Park’s courage and conviction, shitting on Rosa Parks?

Can you argue with a question? Hmmmmm.
A friend of a friend had his Philosophy final at University about 20 years ago, and was faced with something similar. The question was: “Is this a question?”.
He thought about it for two hours without doing anything, and then picked up his pen and wrote: “Yes; if this is the answer?”.
He received first class honours.

I wasn’t offended in the least – just wanted to clarify my position. It seemed that it may have been misinterprited. Much greater effort must be made for me to be offended. Colin was right on the money with what I was trying to say (great article, by the way).

The “If this is a question, answer it” story is clearly attaining urban myth status :)
|
But if it is reaching urban myth status, it does not yet appear on that ultimate arbiter of the truth in such legends, www.snopes.com

Who was Time’s Person of the Year this year?
Was it You? Was it everybody?
Has the establishment already been subverted?
Are we living in a renaissance?
Is it theoretically possible for politicians to run for office at a cost of zero on Youtube?
Could this result in a more proportional representation of the working and middle classes in elected offices of the future?
Could this possibly result in a greater representation of younger people in elected offices?
Will politicians of the future who consistently vote against popular opinion ultimately meet the downfall of their political career?
Does effectively adapting to an increasingly modern and global economy require an increasingly modern and global perspective in politics?
Can you argue with a question?

Is it possible that YouTube wiil do for this election what it did for the Nixon/Kennedy election?
