canon G9 discontinued???
|
Well after the ongoing hype that I’ve heard about the G9, I’ve been looking at it on B&H from time to time to keep the spending $500 on a p&s dream alive. Today I checked again to see if any used cams have come in, and I see that B&H has listed the g9 as DISCONTINUED!
Has anyone heard anything about this? Does this mean we will soon see an even “better” $700 p&s in its place?
Anybody got a used one they want to get rid of? :)

strange how adorama would still have it but bnh would list it as done. thanks for the heads up.

the G9 replacement is about to be announced in a few weeks. There is a good chance that B&H cleared out the last of their remaining stock before adorama.

I just checked Yodobashi in Tokyo, Japan. They still have the Canon PowerShot G9, but at a special price of less than 50,000 Yen.

It does take a bit of courage for pro photogs. to admit to themselves that this constant upgrade mania is a load of BS. Looks like photogs and not other visual artists are the most vulnerable to this type of market manipulation. I know this thought is a bit off the post but maybe worth thinking about. Just when you think your mind is settled, “they pull you back in.” :)

I definitely hear that. On the flip side though, I’m waiting for the new 5d to come out just so I can buy the old one at a more affordable price. If it aint broke don’t fix it!
|
Yeah… Sometimes on LS we all sound like techno druggies just waiting for the next fix. Fixing the what that no one can see or care about.

Even if a new G model comes out, I will still love my G9 for what it is. Indeed I used it today and it served me well – solid RAW files with good exposure, and not too much shutter lag (but still more than my Nikon D3). I won’t be replacing it anytime soon. It’s clearly the best non- DSLR digital camera I’ve had.

If your looking at getting a G9 I recommend looking into the Canon Loyalty Program, they take your old broken P/S and offer a replacement/upgrade for a pretty good price. I bought a broken s410 off ebay for $20 and traded that for a G9 for $250. The camera is refurbished, but I trust that much more than buying used as it has a 6 month warranty. The camera seem to be as good as a new one to me.
Here is a thread on another forum with all the info on the program.

My girlfriend buy one G9… i tested.. but, for my personal opinion.. can be a solution for a poket good camera.. i tryed to shot in JPEG/ RAW.. and in Bridge Cs3, looks better the Jpg in the Dark Side.
Up to 400 Iso.. the dark have too many noise.. and the zoom it’s not precise.. also the different in Breaketing exposition have too many different..
Cheers

Well it’s good to know there are always a couple ways to get the camera despite a production cancellation. Thanks for all the posts. I think I’m still going to hold off for a used or reduced price 5d when a new one of those comes out rather than throw money at an unnecessary camera…

The only complaint I have regarding the G9,is the stupid 4:3 aspect ratio.
Its no DSLR substitute.

To each his/her own, of course… but, I frikkin LOVE the G9.
It’s with me everywhere. It’s got a great feel to it, with nice knobs and metal construction. The files are simply amazing. (Forget about the jpegs, shoot RAW and process them right and you’ll be astounded). Sorry Neal, I don’t see the delay you’re talking about… sure it has to focus, even manually, who doesn’t, but when I push the shutter after focusing, the photo gets shot.
Above all, I absolutely love composing on the LCD. Once I got past the preconception that I “had” to look through a viewfinder, I realized that composing on the LCD is the same as looking at a ground-glass, only better.
It’s not a point-and-shoot. It’s a great, sophisticated camera, and well worth the incredibly short money.
With the file quality (I have run all the tests, my friends… it’s part of what I do), I call it my dream-come-true – my “pocket 120” camera.
…it ain’t hype if it’s true!
As far as the market goes, this is typical of how every company in the tech market releases new products… before it’s announced, supply is curtailed. Product is announced, pre-production demand is generated and production is ramped up. There is about a month or two of the product being unavailable, doesn’t matter if you’re talking cameras or ipods.
My advice is, if you’re wanting a camera now, or within the next month, and can get one, get it. It will be 2 months, likely, before you can get the first rev of the new version.
