CARRYING A BLACK BODY ARMOR ON FLIGHTS?

sounds a bit dodgy to me mate. not recommended

I think they’d probably freak out and ask you about 1 million questions, but in the end it probably wouldnt be a big deal…then again it might be kinda uncomfortable in a little airplane seat.

Not likely to be a problem from past experience because (although this is from the pre 09/11 days) plenty of people who were taking trips to the then dodgy parts of Eastern Europe used to wear them on board with nary a murmur from the airport goons.

I have gone through airports wearing biker jackets with kevlar sides in them and it used to excite the goons because the scanner couldn’t read it, so you should just let them know before it goes through. Expect an inspection.

I wore the whole thing…. Vest, plates, and even helmet to IRAQ stateside to London… In London Heathrow the shit a brick… Caused huge problems… But as long as I carried the vest through the airport it was cool to put the gear on and walk on the plane…
So yes good idea… Yes it can be done… Have fun… you is gonna get some crazy looks… I did!

Alan, i usually check it in no problems but this time i need to carry it down to ethiopia after sri lanka ( i will be based in ethiopia, ergo need the armor there for iraq and stuff ). im way over the 20kgs of baggage all. so im just trying to find ways to carry more stuff.

I have done that a couple of times.

Flying to Amman, Jordan via London; No time loss in regards to Kevlar vest

Flying to Tel Aviv, via Amsterdam; 1h30m time loss at Tel Aviv (Main problem was the Mk6 helmet)

Crossing the boarder from Jordan in to Israel; 40m time loss at the boarder –
some inquiries, all done somewhat politely and I got a free soda out of it.
“I promise, I am not here to fight for any terrorist forces or rebel forces. And nope, sorry, can’t recite my passport number”

Crossing the boarder from Israel in to Jordan; 1h30m time loss – main problem seemed to be the helmet; had to take photos of the guys working there

Flying to Kuwait, via Amsterdam; No more then 10-15 mins time loss. “No Sir, I am a photographer.. No soldier”

Flying to Afghanistan, via Sharjah; 5m time loss, got an extra stamp in the passport apparently saying (can’t read what it says myself) that i had a kevlar helmet and jacket with me when i came in, and i better not leave the country with out said kevlar outfit.

This all was pre-that whole London terror scare mind you all.

i usually have to carry all my shit on with about 30kg extra.
the best thing to do is contact the press people of the flight company you’re using and explain the situation. they should provide you with a letter from the management allowing you an extra 20-30 kg of “professional equipment” (one of the letters i have, says: “professional equipment bag weight not to be taken into account in total” so they don’t even weigh it, and barely check it.
i have a couple of letters like that from different companies, and it’s really helpful. stuff like the vest they keep on the side to be loaded last, unloaded first and i ask them to put a business class sticker on it so they take extra care of it.
don’t fly air-france.

yeah, Guy. Don’t fly Air France. They were charging me 500 dollar of extra luggage and they losted my bags

made it fine carrying on board the vest. and two very heavy carry ons…..
hopefully all of this will end soon, at least for a while. the body armor will stay happily in ethiopia till next time needed. cheers to all and thanks again

I tried tio entry with a normal photojacket and they kick me off to the check in 2 times!!! Up to you. Think in the doggy body guards of LOndon!!
