Cell Phone in Buenos Aires

Does anyone have any suggestions for a temporary/disposable cell phone in Buenos Aires? My current T Mobile plan charges $1.99 per minute roaming and I am seeking a cheaper alternative.
Thank you!

hiya Susan. While I was still in Spain but travelling thru the USA, using my spanish (movistar) triband cell in the USA I purchased a fone card upon arrival in the states, then used my cell to call friends, contacts, etc while punching in the fone card access number. I did use up two fone cards….. when I returned to Spain and got my bill covering the period I was in the states, my cell costs for that period was NICHT, nada!! a friend had told me about it. dont know if it will work in Buenos Aires but hey, if you can find a fone card there, perhaps try it. good luck!! happy new year!!!

I think T-Mobile uses GSM technology. If it does, you might be able to get the phone “unlocked” from T-Mobile. Your store may be able to do that, or you can get codes from the Web that will allow you to do it (I am told). Unlocking it allows the phone to use SIM cards (the little chip that is the heart of the phone system) from other companies. You can buy one for a local telephone provider in most foreign countries (Argentina included, I am sure) and will pay only local rates.

Check out this Web site for info, though you can usually save by waiting to buy the SIM card in the foreign country: http://www.cellularabroad.com/argentinappsc.php

I was just in buenos aires and had a locked phone that mysteriously worked with a chip I bought there. Only one of the companies worked in the phone, so ask the store attendant to check each of the companies (I think personal worked for me in the end). But if your phone doesn’t use a chip, there are many places that sell cheap phones…unfortunately I don’t know any exact addresses. Good luck!

If your phone is unlocked, then buy a chip from Movistar/personal/CTI, and buy $50/20/10 peso cards at kioskos to recharge the account (*444)

I bought a cheap Nokia from Movistar that was $100pesos and used tarjetas to recharge it, no problems.
