China Environment: Qingdao Algae Bloom
Just got back from Qingdao where the water is covered by the fallout of a large algal bloom off the coast. This sort of thing isn’t unknown in China, and it’s normally the result of heavy pollution, but this particular patch of water is where the sailing, rowing, and other open water events will be held in the 2008 Olympics. Officials have tried to get up to 20,000 “volunteers” and workers to clean up the stuff, and they say they need at least two weeks. Pictures, previously unpublished, are available in a lightbox at: http://lightboxes.mscottbrauer.com/qingdaoalgae/
