D300 problems

Hello lightstalkers! I have tried many different settings on my D300, but nothing seems to be near as good as my D200. So I tried the default settings and it wasn’t better.

The problem seems to be with the colors and the contrast: the highlights are magenta and the shadows are green and there is way too much contrast even if I lower it down in camera. The shadow/highlights are very ugly. In fact, it almost looks like an amateur point and shoot camera!

So I wonder if any of you is having the same problems or if you think I got a bad sample.. I have planned a trip to Turkey soon and can’t afford to loose the camera for repair! Do any of you know a different way to proceed other than returning to the shop where I bought it (a 250 km drive for me). Would it be best to go directly to Nikon?

Do you get these results while shooting RAW?..

Bill, the results are the same with raw or jpg. I called Nikon and they said it could be anything, even the lightmeter, which apparently can have an effect on colors. Have you ever heard of this?

Thanks for the post. I’ve been looking at the D300 as the result of chronic problems with the autofocus one of my D200’s It’s been through Nikon in the US and Sweden. Is Nikon having quality control problems?

Hmm?.. Yeah with today’s built in ‘color light meter’s’ and in-camera processing for jpg’s I guess it could be anything. The only thing that has happened with my D200 that is even remotely similar but more of issue with the pre-set WB settings was using say the ‘shade’ or ‘cloudy’ setting while shooting JPG. It would sometimes bias it way to warm so now I always use auto WB and correct in PS. The ‘flash’ WB setting I do use however and seems right on for Nikon speedlights but around 300K to warm for my studio lights.

If I was going to Turkey and my new body was producing crazy colors and contrast I would call the dealer I bought it from, tell/ask him to make appointment with the local Nikon rep to come to the shop and demo it in front of him so he can see with his own eye’s and ask/demand a replacement. Hopefully it’s a smaller ‘pro’ shop that values customer service and not a ‘super’ store that could care less.

Good luck..

i had similar problems when opening the .nefs with “any other program” than capture NX.

so give it a try, maybe it will work for you too.

Milos, it is even worse with NX! Bill I must put the WB at 7250K to have an OK photo in daylight!!!!! So I guess there is something wrong with that too! Is there anybody with a D300 that could show me an out of the camera (unprocessed) portrait made with the neutral setting, that would be great! Thanks a bunch.

7250?!!.. Is there a blue filter on the lens? Yeah, there’s something wrong there.
