Dance photography
|
Heya everyone!
I’m currently studying photography in Melbourne and experimenting with different types of styles and techniques. One area which I have been drawn too and would like to learn more about is the movement of the human body- and in this area dance.
Anyone out there with recommendations or advice on things I should look out for, where I should start going into this area of dance photography? Resources?
Thanks in advance,
Sarah

You might take a look at my story ‘India Dance’ in the ‘Titles’ section of my website

It’s just one way of doing it… There are many others…

Hi, Sarah,
I love dance photography. What kind of dance are you shooting? And are you focused more on studio work or in-performance photography? There is a wonderful essay by Curtis Carter about U.S. dance photography pioneer Barbara Morgan
. Lois Greenfield is among today’s well-known dance photographers. There’s also someone who has compiled a web site of prima ballerinas. Degas’ ballet paintings are also inspirational.

Hi Wayne,
I have heard about Lois Greenfield and love her work. Basically I’d like to do both the stuff that’s in studio, set-up but I’d also like to learn to work in photojournalistic styles of this photography. [ BTW, thanks John, I’m inspired by ‘India Dance’ the rest of your work. ] As I’ve done latin dance before myself I’d definitely do that, ballet and anything comtemporary but I will try anything.
I’ve heaps of ideas comin’ along but right now, resources in starting in this area are lacking- as I’ve only been in Melbourne for a month and really just a I’m beginner when it comes to lighting/ studio.
Currently looking around the area for dancers/ studios I can work around with as a starting point:)

I like to shoot dancers as well. Dancers usually like to be shot, so it’s generally a win-win situation. Strobes are pretty much a must for anything action related. Though with the control they have over their bodies, they can often hold a strenous position quite long.
Joe McNally has some good stuff. It’s under “Dance” within the portfolio section.

If you can find it, look at work by Antony Crickmay, a photographer who took pictures of Sadlers Wells ballet as well as other dance images all over the world. As a child, riding the underground in London, I can honestly say that seeing his work on posters was the first time I noticed photography. I am not sure what he is up to now, but some of the work I saw then was staggering.

I’m got 5 or so dance photos in my portfolio under the “news and features” section at ckpj.com I’m beginning to gather all of my dance images… probably close to 70 or 80 separate shoots… for a book or online project or something.
