CAMBOGIA, PAESE SUPERSTITE
Fotografie di un paese nel bilico tra le testimonianze del passato e il futuro.
La Cambogia puo’ oggi vedere una luce nuova nel suo orizzonte, il processo contro i crimini dei Khmer Rouge e’ stato istituito ed ha aperto le udienze nel 2008, dopo 29 anni dalla fine del regime di Pol Pot. Anonime figure che ordinarono la morte e le torture di molti cambogiani ed anche la morte per fame, stenti e migrazioni forzate saliranno alla sbarra e affronteranno un processo che vorra’ e potra’ mettere fine ad una storia tragica che ha colpito la Cambogia del periodo tra il 1975 ed il 1979.
Il reportage e’ un viaggio tra le testimonianze di sopravvissuti, partendo da Vann Nath , pittore che visse per due anni nella famigerata prigione S21 e che riusci’ a salvarsi (solo 7 persone uscirono vive dei 14mila che vi entrarono) perche’ abile a dipingere ritratti di Pol Pot usati nella classica propaganda di partito che ho costretto a venerare un leader nascosto e spesso latitante tra le foreste . Oltre alle testimonianze del passato anche un resoconto fotografico della odierna Cambogia , un paese che negli ultimi due anni ha iniziato a ricostruire e sperare tra la corruzione dilagante dei governanti attuali e la mancanza di infrastrutture che rendono la vita ancora piu’ difficile.

CAMBODIA, A SURVIVED LAND
Cambodians can today see a light at the end of a long, dark and sorrowful tunnel. The trials of Khmer Rouge leaders at the Khmer Rouge Tribunal (KRT) have finally arrived after a three-decade long wait.
Anonymous shadowy figures who ordered the death and torture of family members, and who were directly responsible for the deaths of millions of others through overwork, starvation and forced migration will now be seen finally climbing the steps of the witness stand to face legal retribution for ordering unspeakable crimes against humanity.
The time has come for Cambodia to cleanse itself of its sorrowful past says Youk Chhang, the director of the Documentary Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam), which has played a critical role in assembling the millions of documents meticulously gathered by the communist regime which will be now used as evidence against the regime’s leaders.
“The tribunal will help the majority of people who are interested in prosecution and is an important foundation for forgiveness, and like it or not it is part of Cambodia’s future. Cambodia is known to the world as the country of the killing fields, and the temples of Angkor Wat – you know Angkor and Angka – one from heaven one from hell. We will make this horrible history become a piece of education to ourselves and also to the world,” says Chhang.
It may often seem to outsiders that Cambodians are indifferent to their past, that they have put up a wall between them and dealing with an unapproachable subject.
