About

I’m an American who has been living overseas since 2000. I have lived in the UK, Tanzania (for seven years) and, most recently, Budapest for the last two years. As of October, 2009, I have started a year long trip, and I will be traveling through the Balkans, the Middle East, Central Asia and the Caucuses.

While I on my trip, I will be looking for interesting stories to write about and photograph. I’m interested in exploring the linkages between travel writing, story telling and journalism, using advancements in social media and technology to bridge the gaps between people and place.

I am blogging and have accounts on flickr, twitter and Demotix.

Syria

Hi All,
Wondering if anyone has been in Syria recently and has any comments about conditions on the ground and/or tips.

I’m a freelancer and am spending the year traveling through the Balkans, the Middle East, Central Asia and the Caucuses.

I’m practicing “accidental” journalism as I travel =) I’m blogging and filing on Demotix as I complete stories that I find along the way.

Specifically for Syria, I am looking for any up to date info on how the authorities are treating photojournalist and any specific do/don’t tips other LS’ers might have (I know this crew is not shy in sharing their opinions!).

I’m hoping to head there in early December. Next stop for me out of Prishtina will be Thessalonki. From there, I will figure my best route into the Middle East. I’m hoping to travel Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Egypt (time permitting). I am aware of the whole passport stamp issue, but I am keen for any fresh info and good tips!

Thanks All!
Best
David
