I started my adult life as a diver. I worked in a variety of environments from oil platforms to tourist destinations, and over many years, became very aware of and frustrated with the rapid decline of the marine environment. This led me to take up photography as a means of expressing that discontent.

For over ten years now, I have worked exclusively as a photographer. For five years I was based in Europe, and covered current events, underwater, environmental and human interest stories in the EU and Middle East for various agencies. In 2009, I returned to Asia, my spiritual home, to document the changes that are occurring there. One of the first things that struck me in China was the enormous and very visible gap between the rich and the poor. Speaking Mandarin and Cantonese gives me unique access to many places and people, and I am currently engaged in a number of personal projects centering around this theme.

Work for Exposure... Heads Up

If you’re working in Beijing you may come across an ad from one Harriet Cherry of Arteasta.com looking for event photographers to cover their fashion and art shows. The ads state that payment is “negotiable”. I responded to one ad today and got the following reply:

Hi David

Thanks for getting in touch about the photography job.
We are a not for profit company, called Arteasta.com (www.arteasta.com is our website, check it out)
We are holding an event next Thursday to showcase our latest collection of new designers and artists from Beijing fashion schools.
As we are not profiting from the event and relying on sponsors etc. for everything, we are unfortunately not able to pay you for your time. But as these photos might be used in publications such as Vogue China, Harpers Bazaar and Time out (amongst many other’s) it would be a good opportunity for you to gain some exposure. Furthermore if it works out, we’d be obviously very keen to use you again for future events which will be bigger in scale and budget.
If you’re ok with this please let us know, and we’ll send you more info about the event.
Many thanks
Harriet Cherry

I responded as usual, saying exposure doesn’t interest me, and pointing out that the publications mentioned in the email are for-profit. I also suggested that the sentence in her ad that says payment is negotiable might be a typo. So far no response.
