Canon 24-70 2.8L problem and question

I have here a Canon 24/70 2.8L wich is optically and externally in excelent condition.
The problem is that when I use the zoom it makes a noise, like a screech (I really don’t know the exact word in english), like if it got wet inside at some point.
Is this a real problem? Does it need a cleaning? Or should I forget about the issue?
