Do you Loan Photos to Exhibitions?
|
Hi LS folks, has anyone loaned photos for exhibitions before? If so, what are the usual arrangements? Do they pay for the use of your photos in the exhibition? I am curious because a curator emailed me to say she wants to include 2 of my pictures in an exhibition but that she can’t pay for the “loan” of these 2 photos. She said her institution will pay for transporting the photos to Europe but nothing more. She said that it will be good for me to have my work in a catalogue that could get sent to museums, etc. Thanks for your replies, if any. warm regards, kat

Why don’t you ask the ‘curator’ if she is getting paid ? And while you are at it, why don’t you ask the printer if he is getting paid for the printing of the catalogue.

kat, as i worked in a art gallery before, the gallery actually buy your work if they will put it up in a exhibition, then they are the one going to sell it. “artist loan” as they call in singapore or “advance payment” in other EU countries.
here in Philippines they dont do it. exhibitions here are not being paid by the gallery instead the artist are paying for the place as a rent.

It happens all the time this way in the USA, if I am understanding your question. No pay, but inclusion in a show that you deem worthwhile is the norm.
