Photo Out-takes

Recently I was in a discussion as to what the term “photo out-takes or outtakes” meant. To me the term meant photos that we edit out or remove from an assignment do to the fact they are not up to our standards for one reason or other. I would like to know what other photographers feel the term “out-takes or outtakes” mean to them.
