EN-4 Batteries
|
I am having trouble with the EN-4 battery. They do not hold their charge for very long. I am using Nikon and the Delkin batteries. I was told by the Nikon Rep. that the problem was with the charger and using the refresh mode. I was told that if you use the refresh mode three times in a row it will kill the battery.
Has any one had this problem?

Actually I have always read the exact opposite… That if you refresh the battery three times in a row that it will restore it to as full of charge as possible. Regardless after shooting a D1 and then a D1H for a combined length of a year and half… The only thing that I have learned, and heard time and time again from others, including those with D2s… The EN-4 just genuinely all around stinks. Just go ahead and buy three or four of them, keep them charged, and always keep them on you… Cause they always die when you need them, you thought you just replaced a new one, or something exciting happens.
I did find though that the cheapest batteries that I bought, which where some sort of asian off brand from B&H seemed to be the best. I also recomend a system which really helped me out in a pinch! Throw a small strip of masking tape with the corner folded on the end of them and pull it off when you use it, that way you won’t get confused when you throw them all in your bag, your in a hurry, or you really need the shot! Also after you switch batteries, it seems strange to me but often they have a fairly full power again. Sometimes if you just pull out the batt., shake it, and rub the end on your jeans, and then throw it back in, you get another 20 shots or show.
But really, the EN-4s just stink. One good thing about recently making the switch to Canon… The battery does sometimes last for DAYS!

Tacitus,
Unfortunately i have to agree with Rene, the Nikon EN-4 battery is a piece of crap. I was using them for my D1x cameras and they really pissed me off. Whatsoever, I replaced the cells inside the battery packs with Ni-Mh cells from Sanyo (its a little bit tricky to open the plastic cover without breaking it, but its possible to do). I also had a friend of mine to build a special charger for those new battries though Im not experineced enough in that kind of things. It worked quite well (much longer lifetime than the original nikon battery), I still dont know if it was because of the Sanyo cells or because of the new charger or maybe a combination. Maybe worth trying though.
