epson perfection 4990?
|
Anyone used one or own one and is it any good, I’m rebuying(don’t ask, big mistake) a Mamiya 7 and will want to scan the negs but cannot afford a dedicated m/f film scanner. Or any other suggestions are of course welcome. P

Erica, i’m sorry to bother you again with a question i have already made in another post, but i’m still a bit dubious about this scanners… :) i think someone told me that they make good 40mb files, that’s about a 25cmx35cm right? what’s the maximum file you can get with yours, and please, can you show me some examples? thanks, my best

hi Miquel, I’m not sure about the numbers, but I’ve scanned and made prints for exhibition that were 16” x20” that I thought looked very good. They certainly could have been bigger. Not that you can tell that much from them, but everything in my LS gallery was scanned on this epson. Is that what you mean?

Yeap, that was what i needed, by the way, loved your work, hadn’t seen most of it yet. It’s great, hope you’re managing to get some goog gigs ;) thanks

I just bought a Canon CS8600F. It list price is $179. It scans 120. So far, I’ve been really impressed with it. I’ve scanned prints, chromes, bw and color negs. The previews come up almost perfect. It a bit slow, but I just realized the USB hub I had it plugged into was a USB 1.0. That was probably making slower than it needed to be.

It also makes massive scans in the hundreds of megabytes if you’re willing to wait. I haven’t taken it to the max, but I acccidentally had it set too high and it gave me a 35inx35inch scan off of a 120 neg that was 190mb and it was grayscale.

I have the 4990, I use it mainly for scanning prints, but did try it with film and got fairly good results.
However, having seen a demo at a trade show, I would suggest looking at the EPSON Perfection V750 Pro! It’s a bit more expensive than the 4990, but still much less than a MF scanner.
Here is a link to a review (with sample scans): http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews/interactive/Epson%20V750/page_1.htm
