http://www.lightstalkers.org/irma_s_bohorquez_geisler Irma Bohórquez-Geisler was born in Mexico City. Irma received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the Autonomous University of Mexico City (UNAM) and a PhD. in Ecological Entomology, from the University of Oxford. Irma moved to New York City in 1991 and currently she resides in Staten Island since 1992. She began her work in photography in 1998. Her photographs have been exhibited throughout New York City galleries in solo and group exhibitions, including the Alice Austin House Museum, Staten Island Institute of Arts & Science Museum (where her photographs are in the permanent collection), Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, A.I.R. Gallery, Soho20 Chelsea, Cork Gallery, the Steinhardt Conservatory Gallery and the Professional Women Photographers. She has exhibited in Mexico City, been published in national magazines and is in many private collections. Irma has been awarded multiple grants from the Council on the Arts and Humanities of Staten Island, most recently in 2006, 2007 for her current project, photographing the Mexican Immigrant Community in New York. Her second exhibition of silver gelatin photographs depicts New York’s fastest growing immigrant community and how they have brought their traditions to their new homeland, but also how this new immigrant community adapted to a new life in New York. This long-term photo essay project aims to show the progress of the Mexican community as they establish themselves in New York. This exhibition is on view at The New York Public Library’s St. George Library Center during the months of September to January 2, 2008. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, September 8 from 2 pm to 4 pm. The library is located at 5 Central Avenue at the corner of Hyatt Street.
