Robert Capa once was quoted as saying "the way to be a good photojournalist is to like people, and let them know it." And Gilles Peress once solemnly told me, "the trick to being a good photojournalist is to know how to take a nap anywhere." I try to live by the advice of those masters.

Many bruises and scratches on my legs, and long-overdue for a tune-up after 20 years humping cameras. Decided in 2001 to cool it on jumping from place to place and focus on somewhere nice and peaceful, as in Colombia. The country has meant far more to me than I ever expected - a smart surprising beautiful complex sweet scary alive real mad land.

My photographic first-born is named I Am Rich Potosi: The Mountain that Eats Men (Monacelli Press, 1999). Also at www.stephenferry.com. Please take a look if you have the chance.

Peace- Stephen
