Acehnese tsunami survivors scavenging for scrap metal to be sold to make ends meet. This has been a common sight in various parts of the province since the December 26, 2004 tsunami destroyed thousands of homes & building and took away lives and peopleÕs means of livelihood.

The lahar threat from Mount Merapi is not discouraging residents living on the volcanoÕs slopes from becoming sand miners. Once farmers and laborers, the villagers have turned to digging sand and rock because the money is better.

Mount Merapi spews blazing lava and hot clouds of gas. Merapi has erupted scores of times over the last 200 years, often with deadly results. In 1994, 60 people were killed by a searing gas cloud while in 1930, more than a dozen villages were incinerated, leaving 1,300 dead.

Almost one year after the megaquake/tsunami struck Aceh Province on December 26, 2004, a teacher continues to hold class in a destroyed structure in the port area of Krueng Raya, a town about 25 kilometers from the capital city of Banda Aceh. With villages located within less than a kilometer of the port area, Krueng Raya was one of the hardest-hit. The absence of a roof, non-existent walls and having to sit down on floors did not stop these childrenÕs interest in attending classes nor did it deter the teacherÕs dedication.
