http://www.lightstalkers.org/philclarkehill Sep 2007 – April 2008: Bolivian Street Newspaper Project: This involved working with the shoeshine boys who work and live on the streets of La Paz, Bolivia. I worked for Hormigon Armado (Reinforced Concrete), which is La Paz’s answer to the Big Issue. It was a documentary photography and outreach programme with the boys, including photography classes, interviews and writing for the paper. I also covered stories and wrote an article for the paper, and exhibited at the Municipal Theatre, La Paz, and at the Foundation of Art and Culture Bolivianos, La Paz. How has the modern world affected life in the Amazon in recent times, an observation, Pastaza, Ecuador. Over the course of 5 weeks I lived with 4 different indigenous Shuar and Quichua communities in Pastaza, Ecuador. The project is an observation of how the tribal people of the Amazon live today, how they still maintain ancient living traditions whilst being affected by the trappings of the modern world. Some of the villages are also volunteer stations. During my stay there, I compiled a portfolio of photos for the communities to be used for a website and as promotional material for ecotourism and volunteer projects. The communities in this area see ecotourism and voluntary programmes as an alternative income to cutting down trees, farming cash crops or selling land to the gold mining and oil companies, who are threatening the whole of the Ecuadorian Amazon. One of the elders mentioned that if the area is seen as a tourist zone, it is safer for the indigenous people, because the Government know there is money coming into that area, therefore it reduces the likelihood of the mining and petrol companies from working in the area and further desecrating the rainforest.
