Chicagoan, Sarah Jones, has a vast spectrum of interests that motivated her pursuit of a career in international journalism. As an only child of a 19th century English literature Professor and International Businessman, she had the fortune of traveling around the world, gaining the deep appreciation and understanding of a vast spectrum of cultures. At 14, after two years of research, Sarah wrote a magazine, Cancer Awareness Magazine (CAM for Kids), a publication aimed to provide awareness and education about the most prevalent form of cancer among her age group at the time, Leukemia. CAM for Kids was reviewed by the Cleveland Clinic Foundation’s Head Physician of Pediatric Oncology at the time, Dr. Michael Levin, and published by the American Cancer Society. The following accepted her request to distribute the publication: American Cancer Society, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, John Hopkins Hospital and Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York.
In her senior year of college, Sarah not only wrote for her school’s weekly paper, The Stentor, but she also earned her title as Associate Producer of the “Someone You Should Know” feature on ABC 7 News Chicago. As Associate Producer her responsibilities included researching and finding feature focuses, setting up onsite interviews, aiding in onsite interviews as well as in-studio during airtime, and assisting in scriptwriting and editing. Sarah’s experience within the Chicago market provided her with the: realization that news was her passion, hands on experience in a large market newsroom, and program experience with iNews. Sarah received her B.A. in Communications from Lake Forest College in 2008 and will be joining City University London's 2009 class for her Masters in International Journalism.
Not only did this former member of the United States Fencing Association Ohio and the On Target Fencing team qualify for the 2001 Junior Olympic Fencing Championships, but currently she holds a red belt in Tae Kwon Do. As a martial artist, Sarah Jones won two silver medals for sparing and forms during the Chun Ma Tae Kwon Do Academy Intramural Tournament. Sarah has also enjoyed participating in track, basketball, and kickboxing. She has hosted numerous fundraisers, successfully allowing attendees to enjoy their experience, while simultaneously providing them the option to help provide others with basic life sustaining necessities. She has volunteered with the Children’s Place, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland Council on Foreign Relations, and the Music Settlement. She has been recognized as one of the top 100 global poverty activists (Power 100, 2008). Through her activism, and unique life experiences, she has had the honor of posing questions of general, and sometimes controversial, interest to several public officials, such as: Former Speaker of the house Newt Gingrich, Foreign Council on Foreign Relations’ Gene Sperling and Public Health Specialist of the Booster Program for Malaria Control in Africa for the World Bank Suprotik Basu. Currently the youngest board member on the Chicago Council of International Programs, Sarah Jones is also a freelance producer for the American News Network, and in the process of submitting several story ideas. Sarah was accepted by TOL to attend their Foreign Correspondent Training Program in the summer of 2008 and will be investigating the international trafficking of children for sexual exploitation in hopes of bringing about preventative awareness prior to the 2008 Olympics. Ms. Jones’ main interests, within the realm of international correspondence, include global poverty, international human rights, and conflict zones. Her passion for international news allows her the humbling opportunity to aid in the empowerment of others through the presentation of researched, investigated and digested knowledge, in the most inter-subjective way possible.
