She left the military in 2002 and earned a MA in Photography from Ohio University's School of Visual Communications in 2004. Burgess is known for ability to capture details and get unique and varied environmental portraits. Burgess is proficient in Portuguese and Spanish, and her interests include issues revolving around the military, women, music, and children with special needs. She is currently a freelance photographer based east of San Francisco out of Modesto, California.
