Here is a significant job that has now been posted in our shop. I am sure that somewhere in LS land there is the ideal candidate... *Picture and Multimedia Editor, NPR Digital Media*

Help develop the visual style that translates NPR’s signature brand of in-depth journalism to a new medium.

NPR.org is looking for a visual journalist who combines skills as a photography editor and multimedia producer to join the talented team that is turning NPR.org into one of the premier news, music and information sites on the Web. This is a full-time union position.

Duties: Improves overall quality, selection, and presentation of photography on NPR.org; makes and edits picture assignments; produces compelling photographic stories that may employ multiple media, including writing, audio, video and animation; develops regular photographic features on NPR.org; collaborates with staff to improve photography and picture-editing skills; and cultivates and maintains relationships with photographers and photographic agencies.

Requirements: At least five years experience as a picture editor or photographer at newspapers, news magazines or news services (print or Web); demonstrated excellence as a visual storyteller and journalist; experience working on a Web publication or demonstrable passion for new-media tools and techniques; must be expert in use of digital photography and equipment and with computers and graphics software; excellent written and oral communication skills, a teamwork mentality, flexibility and sense of humor; experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness and understanding of journalistic ethics. BA in photojournalism, design, photography, or a related field.

Prefer: proven excellence as a reporter and writer, with video photography, video editing, audio production.

BTW, the guy in charge of this position told me today he was ideally looking for a solid photographer/editor who also has good Web skills, not the other way around.

Andy, I expect that living in DC would be preferred, though I am not sure it is required. I suppose if, for example, Michelle McNally applied and wanted to continue to live in NY, we might consider that. But I'll check today and post the answer.

Here is the answer on this employee having to live in DC: Yes, DC is required. (When we have 4 photo editors, perhaps one can live somewhere else.)

I have had a couple of private messages asking whether this is a desk job or involves shooting in the field.

The answer is that it is primarily an inside, editorial position. There may be some odd occasions where the person in this position will capture some files or video, but those will not likely be a regular feature of the position. Ideally the person will be focusing on the quality and effectiveness of visual (and audiovisual) storytelling on www.npr.org (which also will be undergoing a redesign), and thus this person's highest and best use will _not_ be in the field shooting.

in other words, while they demand the individual for this position have high standards in imagery and photography, the job entails ensuring photographers working for this individual will fulfill the visual impact demanded by this person... aaaaaw geeeesh i'd love the position but dont have the practicals of the BA and other educational requirements. wonder how many others are highly qualified for this position and would like to apply, but dont have the educational side covered... :( haPPy holidays
