Canyon De Chelly in northeastern Arizona, if you go that way.

It's on Navajo land, and absolutely beautiful, if you like nature and sacred places. It's like a little Grand Canyon. You can hike, drive and ride (on horses) into it, the Navajo guides are really friendly (and funny). If you guys are into camping, there's a campground on the south rim called Spider Rock campground, a guy named Howard runs it, and he makes one mean cup of espresso in the morning. :-)
If you like hotels you can stay in Chinle, south of the Canyon.

Ah, the open road, that sounds great! Post some pics from on the way if you can!

The Badlands of S. Dakota are an amazing place to sleep on your way between Denver and Portland (if you like to camp). Very intense sacred land! Be sure to sleep in the back country campground.
