Travel to Rwanda

Hey,

I'm a graduate student in LA going to Rwanda this summer out of pocket for a photojournalism gig. Is there a relatively cheap way to get there? Is it easier to go from Europe into Africa? If so, from where. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

fly to amsterdam
then take a flight to nairobi. ( i always find cheap tickets to nairobi)

then you can do a road trip to rwanda - i am thinking you are heading to kigali first ..
flying to rwanda is still very expensive
rwanda is quite expensive so talk to other LS people who have been there before to see if they can put u in touch with some one

There really isn't a cheap way to get there. You're best off flying, the road trip form Nairobi can take two days and it is NOT fun. Better to save the time and energy and fly since it will take you a bit to find your feet once you arrive.

I was there a couple years ago I flew into kigali from brussels and friend did the Nairobi road trip, sounded like the road trip was very unpleasent. I took a 4 hour road trip while in Rwanda and although the roads are great (thanks to chinese prison labor who you see along the roads) 20 people in a toyota minivan isn't so great. Kigali is a great city, it can be a bit pricy for an african city because there are so many ngo's there, but it's pretty safe and clean. Don't photograph anyone in uniform with out permission Rwanda has really be cracking down on journalist recently. I was able to stay with a local who work for world relief, and it was really great. See if who ever is sending you over can hook you up with a local to stay with, the hotels in Kigali are either very nice and very expensive or dumps.

Look for flights into EBB (Entebbe, Uganda) as well...the overland from Kampala isn't too arduous. Emirates occasionally has fantastic deals into Uganda...worth a look.

You can fly to Nairobi and then travel from Nairobi to Kampala, Uganda, but don't take matatu minibus, instead take a bus it is quite comfortable. Then you can take another bus from Kampala to Rwanda. I believe it is the cheapest option.
Unfortunately I don't remember where is this bus station in Nairobi, but I am sure it is listed in East Africa lonelyplanet
good luck
