iPhoto Books

I'm losing my mind!!!!

Is it possible to make a photo book in iPhoto (from iLife '05) without iPhoto cropping your images?

I've tried every layout, and every style of book, but as far as I can tell, iPhoto crops your image to fit the layout. Is there any way to get the full image onto the page? For example, with a panoramic image on a page layout for one image, iPhoto will only display about 1/3 of the image.

Any tricks or tips much appreciated!!

Hi there. Try this facility, "[Lulu]":http://www.lulu.com where you can make your own books bound in a variety of ways and you can design it as you please. You can use Lulu.com to make one off books, as a portfolio for example and keep it secure from public access, or you can go ahead and publish it for a worldwide audience.
Good luck. Hope this helps.

Hi Stefan -- I'd thought about this option --
I think you just need to create a new image in the format of the book pages -- basically drop your panoramic image into a page shaped box (white or black), and submit that to ibook as your photo.

I'll try out Lulu. And yes, Teru, Steph and I came up with the same solution, i.e. changing the canvas size to fit the page. Ah, modern conveniences...

i was thinking of using iphoto to print up portfolios at one point but was disappointed when i saw the books at the apple store. the paper seemed somewhat flimsy, and the cover could have had more weight to it as well. the images were also not of the best quality, but it's hard to tell what caused that since i never saw the original images from which the books were printed. so i, too, would be very curious to hear the results from people who have used it.

all, i've printed a few books from iphoto using ilife 05 and i'm very hapy with the results. i've uploaded full res, 12" long/tall images @ 300 pixels. Stefan, i haven't had any problems having images cropped either. i get the borders on my blad images and full frame on 35mm images also. what i've had to do, when printing softcover books, is run to kinkos to have them bind the books. otherwise the pages will eventually fall righ off.

Lulu quality is varibale apparently. However, if you stay on top of them during the initial set up, then the results can be more than satisfactory. I gather all this from my own research as I prepare a couple of projects. "[Amy Ellis]":http://http://www.lightstalkers.org/amyellis here at lightstalkers has published with Lulu. I'll send her a message to tell us of her experience.

Re: iPhoto Books

I had some major and some minor troubles using lulu.com. It was the best option I found out there for what I needed. They do have a good set up as far as self printing goes, and great prices. But there are some kinks that haven't been worked out. But what really matters is the quality. I have to say that I was a little bit dissapointed. Overall the quality was decent, but not photo book quality. Its not the greatest resolution, so don't expect it to look like a coffee table photo book. They have no color standard so the only way to predict how the photos will look is to print off one copy, change the color balance of your screen, re-adjust each image and then upload a new version. The images from my first print were really pink and over saturated, but after adding green and cyan, the second print looked far better. Same as above, the weight of the page could be better, but the binding seems like it should hold together. My B&W book looks much better than the color book I made. But I am not sure if that was just because there is no color shift, or not.

The option to buy an ISBN for the book is great but if you are looking for the ISBN Plus, you better not want it to be in color. Also, they have just added sizes too so you can now print square and horizontal books.

The live support is an interesting idea, but they are not at all experts on photo books. I did find a great help on the forums, but that meant it took days to figure out my problem. I recomend using InDesign to create the book in whole so that there isn't a problem with PDF converting.

So in the end, I guess it depends on what you are wanting to do with the books. If you are really looking to sell them, I am not sure if it is that much of a profit maker, but as a way to print off a portfolio, I think it would work quite well.

Best of luck to you, -Amy
