Member Directory

Hey guys -- am doing some revisions to the Member Directory. The existing directory doesn't make it terribly easy to find people by location/profession, which is a high priority for us -- think editors finding photographers for assignments. Any notes?

heya b, the new cross-referenced search system is pretty cool.

I think the mapping and flags needs some work though. One thing I'm seeing is flags in asia or europe with members who are listed as being in new jersey or utah.

also, when you hit a flag, say for someone in hawaii, it doesn't seem to take you to a hawaii page, just the first page of the US listings.

Cool. There's not really a clever way to fix incorrect coordinates; about all we can do is contact those people and ask them to fix it. In the meantime, if anyone has an idea on how to enforce correct coordinates, by all means share it.

As for clicking the flags -- that's not hooked into the new directory system yet. When we go live, those links will work.

In case anyone was wondering, no, the exciting new Google Maps API doesn't work for us. They say their maps now cover the whole world, but it's an exaggeration; outside the US, most of their database is just loose country outlines. Worldkit (what we use now) is still better.
hi Shinji,

i'm really digging the new directory. you what else would be really useful for peeps like me? i'd love to be able to create a custom list of frequently watched locations... so that when i log in, i'll get a list of links that take me to "my hotspots". As it is, i tried to bookmark pages... but as far as i can tell, the url remains the same no matter what my fiiltering criteria.

best,
jasmine

Good tip Jasmine -- I've adjusted the Member Directory so that you can bookmark your searches.
That is a very cool idea jasmine, and something that all editors should be told about and encouraged to make use of. Smart!
Re: Member Directory

i'm finding it really hard to add people to my list efficiently, since people that I know are signing up and joining all the time.

i also really hate the "filtering ON" for posts displayed, doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of this site? i can reach the people I know any time. It's the new input from strangers that I want to see also, so that connections are made.

Re: Member Directory

Hey Alan, thanks for the feedback -- very helpful.

On filtering -- this is ultimately a personal preference, so the tricky thing is coming up with a solution that works for everyone. Tell you what -- I'm going to make the filter setting stickier... from now on, if you turn it off, it'll stay off permanently. Try turning it off, and see how that works for you?

On adding people to your list -- yeah, this is something I've been thinking about a lot. How about this -- in the Member Directory, there are now plus/minus icons next to every name. Try using these to quickly add/remove people from your list. Also note that you can sort the Directory by "member since" -- that'll show you everyone who's signed up recently, and you can click "next" to see the next page, all the way back if you want. Does that help?

Let me know what you think, and we'll keep tweaking this stuff. Thanks man...
Hi Kelly -- yeah, seaching by "specialty" is in the pipeline; I hope to have that up soon. I'm also investigating ways to consolidate all those profession types...
