Got into all sorts of bother trying to work out how post these.

I would post a short narrative of each pic if I could work out how!!!

YOu can PM Shinji to check with him, as I have yet to try any of this myself, but in the meantime here is a suggestion from Ed Leveckis on another thread: you can use this line of code....just replace the "XXXX's" with the url of where your pics are on the web. ;<img scr="XXXXXX"> ignore the ; when posting though... I think alot of the LS members are using Flickr (see your edit profile page) to store the images there.

Thanks Jon, I'll give that a try. Is Flickr where you can store so many pictures in your own gallery? If so, I'm already using that, and it's full. Cheers, Lee.

OK I was mistaken, though Ed and Grant and a bunch of others have been posting to the threads by using Flicker, I am pretty sure. You will find them on my contact list, and maybe you can send them a PM to get their advice. I know that one of the threads on LS contains advice direct from Shinji regarding how to do this, because everyone was posting direct to LS and it was taking up bandwidth. Sorry to mislead you Lee. The answer is definitely floating around somewhere here.

Hi guys, here I am. It's pretty easy. Lee, if the photo you want to embed is in your Flickr account, you can use this type of code: <img src="http://photos15.flickr.com/22459485_5cdec26b80.jpg?v=0" /> Where the URL is that of your photo. (To find the URL of your photo, try right-clicking on it on the Flickr page.) Also, if you're using Firefox, you should see a formatting toolbar on Lightstalkers -- there's an image icon you can click, which gives some help.

Sure is.

The narrative that I wrote for these pictures included a mention of that satellite dish.
That picture was (for all intents and purposes) commisioned by Amir Hassanpour, a professor of the study of Civilisations of the Near and Middle East, who wrote to me about the Jelali Nomads and requested certain information. Amongst other things he specifically wanted to know how the technical communications age has affected the people of this region.

I took that picture with that subject in mind.

I learned that all television programmes are Turkish language only. That's fine for most of the younger people, but many of the older people around the mountain speak Kurdish only; however, they still all have television back in the village apparently, as they enjoy having something to look at even if they don't understand any of it.

OH i saw a photograph that reminded me of it ... it was on the new york times magazine last Sunday ... It's a photo of a mountain surrounded by thousands of buildings , and again , all had satellite dishes, if you cant find the mag in UK I'll try to get a copy and e-mail it to you ...

Re TV, yes the Turkish stuff is in Turkish, but they're all watching the Kurdish channels coming out of Northern Iraq. I've been told that TV brought a "revolution" to the villages in E. Turkey...they saw they didn't have to live the way they were living (which can be rather primitive!).

You asked if "these folks still ride", which makes me wonder if you're implying they had a history of it.

They are semi-nomadic people, who live in permanent villages in the winter and take to the mountainside once the snow has melted. They make their living from livestock, which is mainly sheep, although some of them own herds of cattle also.

Donkeys are used for hauling things between camp and most families appear to own at least one horse, which are ridden every day, very proficiently.

Saddles are used occasionaly but the most common setup is with a rough blanket and some kind of stirrups rig.

Thanks, Lee. Yes, I was hoping for some folks who did a lot of riding, an unlikely find. I've heard of seminomadic peoples---these must be them---in the East. Truth is, I'm hoping one day to find a story to cover on horseback, just for the fun of it. Beautiful horses.
