'Inge Morath was an Austrian-born photographer who was associated with Magnum for almost fifty years. She died in January, 2002. Your portfolio is only as strong as the weakest photograph. Therefore if you have weak photographs included to make the number 40 then you may be weakening your portfolio. The other side of the coin is that you will be competing against photographers who HAVE submitted 40 photographs all of which may be strong. If you're comparing two portfolios where all the pictures are strong but one has 32 pictures and the other 40, you may natually gravitate toward the portfolio with 40 since the photographer has given you 'more' to look at. So, you better have at least 40 images. I would rather see 40 strong images. I'd recommend trying to get together at least 80 images. Then see if somebody (you trust) can help edit down to 60. Better yet have them edit it down to what they consider are the strongest and see how the numbers work. Ofcourse you should do the edit first yourself to see how it looks to you, but outside help (from a trusted pro, hopefully) can be a big help. Since this is aimed at young photographers I'm sure there's some flexibility on how they will view numbers. Forty strong photographs may compete well against another portfolio of 50 strong pictures. [For Magnum's normal portfolio review they just want 80 photographs. A photographer who's worked long enough to be considered for Magnum should easily have 80 strong photographs.] For the Morath grant I'm sure forty will be welcomed. As stated, the Award is given "to assist in the completion of a long-term documentary project." A submission with only ten images, for example, is unlikely to provide evidence of the depth and intellectual commitment to a project that the jurors may wish to see. Similarly, a submission with 100 images may compare poorly to another that is smaller but better edited. If the project is strong and the edit really good, the difference between 32 and 40 is probably irrelevant. A text accompanying the images may help to fill in further detail about a project, but should not be relied on in any case. The best advice that I would offer to all applicants for the Award is to take time in preparing your submissions, and never submit an application that you have not already checked thoroughly. John Fulton's suggestion to show your image sequence to others before submitting it is also very wise. Good luck! She posted the CD and all of the required documents earlier today. She and I took our time to select 40 images that would best represent her work. It was a difficult task. I know that she would have preferred to send her 20 strongest images. However, she chose not to because it clearly states in the submission guidelines that the minimum number of images allowed is 40. It also says that failure to meet the requirements of the award will mean instant disqualification. I quote 'If your portfolio does not meet these requirements, it will not be considered.' (Magnum Photos) I would really like to know what's going on with this award. Will the judges be honouring the guidelines set out in the submission requirements? I ask because I know that many of the women (who have spent a great deal of time preparing their images for the award) will be very disappointed if someone who submitted fewer than 40 images wins the prize. Your decisions will depend on the work itself. - Are the photographs in your project normally accompanied by captions? If so, then I would include them. - Since the Award is given to support the completion of a project it may be useful to focus on one body of work, for example showing directions taken and suggesting others yet to be explored. On the other hand, if your secondary projects are related to the first, and that relationship can be demonstrated in a way that's advantageous to the first through their inclusion, then that may also be useful. I think that it's safe to say that the most successful applicants will be those whose submissions most clearly satisfy the goals of the Award, whether through one or multiple groups of images. That's why I've been reiterating “to assist in the completion of a long-term documentary project.â€* Clearly, the jurors are looking for the work of talented photographers. Equally though, they're looking for a project that's worthy and will benefit from the Award. I hope that's helpful.
