In addition to learning how to interpret life through a camera, the 35 students developed and printed their images in the darkroom. Photographing together, Schiffer and her students created a "photo community,"a place where photography is collaborative, and where knowledgeable students can teach alongside their instructors. The 35 students develop their film and print their images in the darkroom. The YMCA created post cards of the students' work to raise money for the program. In 2006, the program expanded when Schiffer brought instructors Hanifa Haris, a student at Parsons The New School for Design (Schiffer's former student) and Keisha Scarville, a New York basedphotographer and teacher at The International Center of Photography. The instructors encouraged students to express themselves through poetry in addition to photography. The program will continue into the future as Schiffer continues to teach and bring new guests such as Suné Woods, a New York based videoartist/photographer and instructor to the reservation as well as continue to bring back teachers who have developed relationships with the kids. When additional funding is obtained, the YMCA will hire a full-time local instructor to extend the program throughout the year.
