Photo Fellowship on Mining in India

Fellowship offers one-month stipend to investigate mining

Print reporters and photojournalists in India are eligible for a fellowship program focusing on the social and environmental impact of the country’s prosperous mining industry.

The India-based Center for Science and Environment (CSE) is organizing the fellowship, whose theme this year is “Mining, Environment and People’s Protests.” The program offers a stipend of INR40,000 (about US$920) for research, travel and writing from September 15 to October 15. Application deadline: August 20.

According to CSE, India’s mining sector is growing by 6 to 7 percent yearly. The industry has attracted substantial foreign investment, but it has also raised many questions about its effects on the environment and the public.

“It is an issue that has stirred deep emotions, fanned desperate conflicts, and upset the applecart of ‘development,’” CSE says in its fellowship announcement. “It is also an issue that has largely gone underreported or glossed over by the media.”

For more information, contact Souparno Bannerjee at souparnee@cseindia.org or Shachi Chaturvedi shachi@cseindia.org of the CSE Media Resource Center, telephone 011-29955124.

Re: Photo Fellowship on Mining in India

This post interested me a while back as well, however there seems to be some confusion as to the age of this post and if it is actually still an opportunity.

FYI, I emailed the two contacts and the Souparno Bannerjee at souparnee@cseindia.org email was returned as a relected email.

Can anyone actually confirm if this is actually happening or not?
