French Guiana malaria?

I'm flying to Cayenne/Kourou in a few weeks so I've topped up my Yellow Fever but my GP says I don't need any Malaria prevention if I keep to the coast and not venture into the darkest interior.

"If you feel feverish, seek help immediately" said the doc, vaguely.

I took Chloroquin in Borneo and other Malarial locations years ago but I gather it's no longer effective and my colleague is taking Malaroneso along so, do I have anything to worry about any of you who's been there recently? Any working advice about FG would be much apopreciated too.

Thanks, Richard.

Look here: lots of good advice applies to French Guiana too - which is also chloroquin resistant.

Re: French Guiana malaria?

I've been there twice, in the interior (Surinam and Guyana too) and never took a drop of the shit in my life - I got too freaked out on Africa and have just made a special efort at keeping myself vigilant, but of course you cannot detect everything.

As for Kourou and Cayenne, it's basically France! I'd be very surprised if there was malaria in these parts. Kourou is slightly inland and very dry and open and hot and lots and lots of pavement (with Russians running around singing French military songs - Legionnaires) Anyway, Kourou just seemed to me the opposite kind of place to get malaria/ Cayenne is very nice, simple sophicticated little city. The ocean there is rather dirty and rocky and virutally impossible to swim in, hence Devils Island, and again, like Kourou, it is rather hot and dry, but with a little more greenery than Kourou.

They have EXCELLENT t-shirts in Kourou, and stickers too - can I send you money and you can ship me back some souvenirs?

Hello Don,

That's quite an insight: Russian Legionnaires and T-shirts - though sadly I'll have 90 minutes tagged as shopping. I love the idea of importing souvenirs by the case back to the U of K, I'm there to meet a satellite that will allow the Japanese to stick Blue Tooth devices in their ears so I'm absolutelly looking forward to seeing the dirty sea too and think of Henri Charriere swimming to freedom with Dustin Hoffman. Of course you may send me the money anyway ..

As for Malaria, I've decided to take some very strong garlic pills and hope I reek so bad, the buggers fly in the opposite direction.
