Grand prix international de photographie de Vevey

So,

The Vevey "Images" festival is launching a new round of money-giving goodness.

The people in charge of the festival are responsible for the Vevey school's demise, and are, for having dealt with them extensively, publicly shunned nefarious and incompetent idiots. The one spot of competence they do maintain, however, is spending money. Last year, they blew half a million swiss (400'000 u$ at the current rate) on bringing a few thousand (the official number is five...) [edit :] visitors to the town, and, since local politics here are extremely rewarding of such feats, they have a budget to spend for next year, and that that budget comes in part from the taxes i pay, so if someone feels like making something good out of it, here goes :

The Grand prix international de photographie de Vevey is an international photography contest organized
by the Foundation "Vevey, Ville d'Images" and launched in the context of the IMAGES'06 festival. The contest aims to reveal
talents, regardless of age, and to give them the means to express themselves on a subject of their
choosing.

The object of the contest will be a project submitted by the candidates and not a final work.

The international jury, made up of personalities of the visual arts world, will base its decisions on the project dossiers and designate the winners of the special prizes, the distinctions, as well as the Grand prix international de photographie de Vevey. The richness of reflection on the content and the form of the work will constitute the main criteria of selection. The prize-winning works will be exhibited in the context of the IMAGES'06 festival. They will remain the property of the Foundation Vevey Ville d’Images.

The Grand prix international de photographie de Vevey consists of a sum of € 20'000 destined to the realization of the winning project, with a view to the exhibition of the final works during the next edition of the festival in 2006. The general catalogue of the Images festival will dedicate a special dossier to the prize-winning photographer.

An entry form, available upon request or to be downloaded on our internet site (www.images.ch), is to be sent in duly filled out to the address listed below no later than 1st October 2005.

Entry Form in PDF

What other people who know them think of the people who are organising this :

A.D Coleman

An overwhelming majority of their former students, plus Arno Minkkinen, Robert Blake, Sarah Moon and a few others

Arno Minkkinen and Jacqueline Hassink

and an explanation of what they did to garner all this good will is available here.

Dont want to be a killjoy here, but that doesnt sound too good to me, unless "property" is very loosely defined and refers just to the prints made for the show. NOBODY owns my images but me.

according to the PDF, the photographer remains the sole copyright holder, so I think it is just the dossier/physical application materials in question here -- although it sounds like for an additional 20 euros, they will return those to you.

sounds like a messed up situation with the school.
Re: Grand prix international de photographie de Vevey

Teru, the school situation is beyond recovery. I fought, alongside the students, through two lawsuits last year to try and save the place, but unfortunately, the morons in place are too deeply entrenched in the Swiss political consensus culture for anything to be done.

There were, give or take, 50 students in the program when the changes were announced, divided in three classes. Two of them sued, the others were comming in and weren't elligible. One class left en mass before the beginning of the year, another started, saw how bad things were and went on strike to protest the changes (they were subsequently expelled and, after a second lawsuit, re-integrated). The class who went on strike is obviously going elsewhere next year, so is the third class, who, despite starting off as 18 students ended up as moderate group of 6, with two continuing in the program next year.

I'd just be extremely wary of invitations to teach (i know several people from the journo community, including Rip Hopkins who refused and Laurent Van Der Stockt who accepted, have been contacted), as the program they're running now has nothing to do with the one that used to be... So despite what they could say (and it's not beyond them to use the names), you wouldn't be "teaching in the same program as Don McCullin, Helmut Newton, Duane Michals, Antonin Kratochvil, Sarah Moon, Ralph Gibson, etc", taught in. Of the 40 or so a-listers who were teaching for a week or more on an annual or biennal (Duane...) basis, two came back last year, and none are comming back next year.

Hi Matthias, I'm sorry to hear the story, but it sounds like you all put up a hell of a fight. It's unfortunate that a lot of us on this side of the water never heard about the situation, or what sounds like an on-going conflict. I hope we can use this site as a link between the far corners of our scene, and as a tool in the global struggle against corporate wankers.

more power to you.
Re: Grand prix international de photographie de Vevey

What an illuminating 'blast from the past' reading all this. I'd heard little about Vevey for some time, but in 2000 my film 'Blind Grace' was exhibited at the Argos-Vevey Festival and won 1st Prize there. At that point we all stayed in a very cool 'squat' by the lake free of rent or other hassles and the festival itself while loaded with many of the usual so so talents, also had some very cool people to exhibit with. Michael Ackerman, Antoine D'Agata, Morten Anderson and others as well [including fellow lightstalker Idalina Pedrosa].....it was good hanging out with them.
But then of course eventually the squatters were all evicted, the communal art space Toit du Monde torn down and most folks had moved on...last I heard. And now this......
Keep fighting the good fight. I'm curious to hear more.
