      <title>Afghanistan: Giving Women a Voice/Paula Lerner Gallery Talk</title>
      <description>GALLERY TALK

AFGHANISTAN: GIVING WOMEN A VOICE
with Photographer Paula Lerner

Plenty of news stories out of Afghanistan cover the ongoing insurgency and the hardships of war. But few tell of how people are rebuilding their lives in war's aftermath.

Over the last three years Boston area Photographer Paula Lerner has made multiple trips to Afghanistan to document the lives of women in that country. During her travels she has covered the work of the Business Council for Peace (www.bpeace.org), an organization that helps women in post-conflict countries set up self-sustaining businesses. Profiles of a group of unusual business women in Kabul were presented as a multimedia feature Lerner did in collaboration with the washingtonpost.com web site. At this event, Lerner will show &quot; The Women of Kabul,&quot; published on the Washington Post site, as well as debut &quot;Hidden Lives,&quot; a new multimedia piece on women in Kandahar. Both of these features give women in different walks of life a chance to tell their powerful stories, opening a window on a world that has been largely unknown or closed to Western observers.

Please join us for a lively presentation and discussion.

      <title>Re: Afghanistan: Giving Women a Voice/Paula Lerner Gallery Talk</title>
      <description>Erica and Ana Elisa,

Many thanks for the kind comments.

For those of you who are not in the area and would like to see one of the multimedia features that I will be presenting, this one was published on the washingtonpost.com site and the link is here:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/interactives/afghanistanwomen/

It is titled &quot; The Women of Kabul&quot;, and as I mentioned in a previous post is about an unusual group of women entrepreneurs in Kabul who are rebuilding their country as they build their businesses. I find these women quite inspiring.

I will also be showing a work-in-progress multimedia feature on women in Kandahar. Once that is published I can post a URL, so if you're interested to see the new one, stay tuned.

Any LSers who are in the greater Boston area who can come, please come say hello before or after the event.

Best,

Paula Lerner

      <title>Re: Afghanistan: Giving Women a Voice/Paula Lerner Gallery Talk</title>
<description>Sarah, thanks for the bump. And Ana Elisa, thanks also for the note. I know have known Brian Storm for years and I think he and his team at Media Storm are doing great stuff. I hope to work with them at some point, and I will keep you posted if I do.

I will post the Kandahar multimedia piece after its published, and will let you know when that happens. Thanks so much for your interest.

In the mean time, I hope to see some LSers at the gallery tomorrow night -- please do come say hi if you're there.

Thanks!

Paula
