Mac G5 single or dual processor for RAW

I'm looking to buy a desktop Mac and am wondering if the iMac G5 1.8 mghz single processor is enough to work with RAW images, or whether it really makes sense to get the dual processor G5. If anyone has experience with the iMac I'd love to know just how fast the horse runs.

I have a 20* iMac G5 and process Canon RAW Files with C1 Pro; it is much faster than my Powerbook G4 1.5. It work well with Photoshop but get as much RAM as you can afford, 2 gigs if your budget will allow.

I would love a PowerMac Dual G5 but the total cost with a big screen and all the other options is out of my price range.

The only problem with my iMac is the absents of a Firewire 800 port.

Thanks Richard. I've survived nearly two years with my g4 powerbook 1.33 so I'll appreciate any notable improvement in speed, I'm sure. The g5 tower is out of my price range too.

How do you move images onto the iMac - via USB 2?

Most if not all of my RAW files are taken away from home, I have a small Firewire hard drive that I take with me to back up my laptop. When I get home I just plug the mobile drive into the Firewire 400 port and copy them over. I also have a Firewire CF card reader for the odd time I need to copy files from cards to the iMac.

Having just looked at the spec on the Apple site it looks like the new 2 Ghz machine has a better spec than my 1.8, the graphics card is a big improvement on the one I have.

I just got a dual 2.0 G5 with 2.5 gigs of RAM and it eat RAW files with zero problems. My friend just got a 20 inch imac and it's about 4 times slower. Get the dual!

Thanks for the comparison. In the end my bank account will decide the issue. Would love to go dual but may have to be content with the iMac. I wish the stores would let us download a couple of fat images on a showcase model and let us see just how fast or slow their machines are.
